I joined the drop in order to dip my toe into open-back headphone waters. I've long wanted to get more "serious" headphones (I've had my B&W P5s for nearly seven years, though the right channel crapped out on me last week, but I've not had any decent quality over-ear 'phones, open or closed, until this week).
To replace my P5s (which I'll have repaired, at some point), I scored a deal with a floor demo of Sennheiser HD630VBs (70% off CDN retail of 680$). After a week of listening to more music than I have in any month over the past year with 'phones (via my Modi 2/Magni 2--both Uber--stack), I'm quite happy (listening with them right now, in fact). I needed closed backs (spend a lot of time in libraries and archives--I'm an historian), so that, plus the great price, is what got me the 630VBs. I am curious as to what to expect, sound wise, from the 58X compared to the 630VB (with all caveats attached to closed vs open).

PeteMtlI bought the last one in stock (floor demo) at Fillion near the Olympic Stadium. It was listed on their website as a 299.99$ clearance item, though it’s no longer on the list (just checked the site). All other Montreal area, as well as Canada wide sites I could find list it at full retail. I was able to talk the guy down some more because I also picked up a TV (I guess he could have taken the extra off the TV’s profit margin but it was taken off the 630VBs on the bill). But even at 300$, it was 56% off and I’d be just as happy with my purchase without the further discount.

PeteMtlLayton has a good selection of headphones (my nephew got some Hifimans there a couple of years ago, can’t remember model, bu I think it’s the 400i). I was planning to go there as well but after I lucked into the 630s, there was no need.

PeteMtlAt this moment, they’re showing the Hifiman 400i at 300$, down from 609$ retail. If I hadn’t needed closed back AND hadn’t just bought the 630s, I’d jump on those right now (photo on the site looks like what my nephew has and I’ve heard them—very nice).

OvationI know, the HE-400i on sale, I’ve seen it too. They are on sale on Amazon too. The reason is that it is discontinued. A new successor has been introduced to the public at the CES 2018 in Las Vegas a couple of weeks ago. I admit the offer shakes me a bit. But I already have the HD6xx and the HD600, as well as the HD598 (that I don’t really use anymore). I would like to get an over the average closed headphone. Presently in the closed headphone dept. I only have the HD25, the Amperior and the M50x. The first two are good, a little sibilant and are on-ear, which is fine to cancel outside noise but are not ideal for long sessions in terms of comfort. The M50x is not bad, but not that good either, not an over the average headphone like I would like to wear and the highs are a bit too bright and metallic to my taste. I am curious about the HD630VB, never heard it yet so i’d like to try before buying (I know Layton lets customers do that, not sure about Fillion). I admit i’m influenced because it’s a Sennheiser and it’s a 600 series headphone, although not the same kind as the 600/650 models, I know that already. Maybe I should try the Fostex models, but i’d like to try first and this isn’t Massdrops’s advantage. I don’t want any closed 500 series headphones, I never was a fan of the 500 series bass and dynamics, while a recognize they are relatively good sounding and popular headphones. What else is there to consider in the over-ear closed headphone choices in the upper than average reasonably priced category?

PeteMtlI spent nearly two hours at Fillion, trying five different phones (two B&O, Sennheiser HD-1, Master Dynamic something 40 and the 630s). The HD-1 was nice, very comfortable (more than 630s) and if the 630s were at retail, I probably would have gone with HD-1, though not before trying B&W P7s and NAD HP50s. In the end, the 630s, with adjustable bass, was less bass heavy than HD-1s (personnel preferenice) and with a more detailed top end. Also bigger soundstage (as it should be).
The OPPO PM-3 was also nice (only got a brief listen) but was 500$, so I didn’t give it an extensive listen.
The sales guy did give me 30 mins with Focal Utopia at 5000$. Sublime sound but no sale (unless I win 6/49 tonight).

OvationThank for the info. I have the HD1, well it’s the Momentum 2 over ear wireless, same thing, with the bluetooth/cancelling mode. it’s enjoyable, but really this headphone has an unnatural frequency response, both in passive mode and in Bluetooth/cancelling mode. But last July I couldn't stop buying myself a pair at Centre HiFi 399$ (instead of 649$). Last time I checked, which is this week, they are still offered at this price. Love them for travelling, but not for living room listening. Did you try the B&W P7?

PeteMtlDo you mean B&W P7? I tried them a couple of years ago at Son et Image audio show, comparing them to my P5s (which I had with me). More comfortable than my P5s but very similar sound. If I didn’t think I could have my P5s repaired, I would not have gone with 630s before re-trying the P7s. But I decided to go with something different to broaden my audio options. If my P5s prove to be unfixable, I’ll very likely get P7s.

Sennheiser PC37X randomly goes bad after disconnecting the cable ?

Greetings, Yesterday I was using my headset like normal with my macbook, just listening to music and on a call with people like usual, and the headset was perfectly fine. The stock wire that came with the headset is extremely long and yesterday it annoyed me very much that it kept getting tangled with itself, so I decided to see if the cable is replaceable. I pulled out the cable from the headset and saw the adapter, and looked online for a replacement. Upon plugging it back in, the audio sounded extremely muffled and washed out. Im not sure what I did wrong to make it mess up like that as I've always taken good care of it, ive had it for about 2 years and its always just been chilling on my desk, but anywho I thought the cable just went bad and ordered a replacement. The replacement came, and the issue is still persistant, so I am not sure what the issue is I've tried multiple different headsets and the issue is not with the port, and I also tried it with my windows laptop and...

Recommendation for my next headphone set? I have Koss 95x

Hey all, What would you recommend I get next and why? I have Koss ESP-95x electrostatic massdrop headphones. These are my first and only audiophile set. I love them. I think my only real requirements is $500 or less for the headphones and that they have a little more low end. I don’t need thump but these are really light on lows…but the experience is still awesome. Also any recommendations on an amp? I only have my electrostatic thingy. I am using the Topping D50 DAC. thx!!

Should I exchange the PC38X for better headphones?

I bought the PC38X headphones FOR GAMING and they are great, but I have NO use for a Microphone since I don't do competitive gaming and I was wondering if there were better headphone options at a similar price without a headphone, where (presumably) more of the cost was put into making it sound better. I also find that my PC38X don't get quite as loud as I would like and I was wondering if a cheap amp like the iFi Go link would draw a little more volume out of my phones. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BN6MM822?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details I went with the PC38X since it was considered the best bang for buck headphones.
