Changing HD58x's bass would be a DISASTEROUS choice.
As the name suggests, This drop is to commemorate the Legendary HD580 headphones. So the sound of HD58x should resmebles the HD580 which had the same tonal balance as the HD600. But the leaked FR curve of HD58x is more like the HD650 than the HD600. If HD650 was the target, they should named it 65x, not 58x. Isn't it? After they changed the bass respones, The name and concept of this headphones become deceptional.
If you want the tonal balance of HD650, We already have HD6xx! There's no reason to make another heaphones with overlapping, team-killing positions.
The HD580 was not an inferior headphons than HD650. They are equally great headphones with own unique, unreplaceable characteristics. But now, it seemes that 58x is desparately imitating hd6xx's responese to become a degraded copy of 6xx.
It is nowhere near to commemorating the legend. It is a shame. It is a pathetic humiliation.

There are many people who already have the HD650 or HD6xx before they joined this drop. Will they be happy to have an inferior version of HD650? Well, I'm not the one. If I wanted the HD650, I'll buy an HD650, Not the 58x.
Oh, It is your first Sennheiser and you want 58x to be warmer, bassier headphones? Well... GO JOIN HD6xx! WHY NOT?
There are already great, already bassier, already cheap affodable choice in front of your face! Don't you have extra $30 to join the HD6xx?
I can't understand why the people are whining at HD58x and try to ruin the whole drop.

PFN_KThe treble is clearly different. It will not sound like HD 650.

PFN_KThey said from the start that the the final one is going to have better bass extension. They also said t he sound is clear, fast, dynamic, and lively: reminiscent in some ways of the HD 600 and in others of the HD 650. " The name is just a homage - it was never meant to be HD 580 Jubilee.

Tup3xI know it is not exactly 580 and it is based on 660S. I know it is not 580 nor 650. BUT AGAIN, THAT'S NOT MY POINT. Don't pretend to be silly. Face the situation. Try to read what I wrote.
As you said, they told us 58x will get better bass extension. Okay, I can accept that depend on how much. But more bass than HD650??? Is this what we really expected? Could we expect this kind of bass extention from the name "58x"?, at the first time we joined this drop?
And the homage, Huh. WHY DID'NT THEY HOMAGE THE HD 650 for this headphones? WHY THE HD 580? Do you really think it natural that the heaphones named after HD580 has more simillarity with HD650 than HD580? I don't think so. It is just a nonsense.

PFN_KThe highs are close enough to HD 660 S that this is definitely not going to sound like HD 650. No one knew how much they were going to improve the bass extension. It obviously surpassed your expectations and now you are ranting because it didn't turn out quite what you thought it would.
It remains to be seen how it actually sounds. Graphs don't tell the whole story.

PFN_KThe HD6XX has great bass, but it's by no means a bass heavy can... the overall bass is balanced (other than subbass which IS lacking/dropped off.) The HD58X prototypes that were initially measured were a little bass deficient - well they were the most bass anemic of any measured Sennheiser 6 series. So going by the new production measurement graph that was briefly shown thusfar, the bass level has been brought back to a more balanced level, not overdone.
There are also things about the HD6XX which the HD58X was promised to do differently... namely more forward presentation of the highs with a little more energy/bite, which is my main (minor) gripe with the HD6XX. That alone is enough to separate the HD58X from the HD6XX, and why I joined the drop over the HD6XX, besides a $50 less buy in. The improved bass at a proper level makes it even better as long as the highs are still improved in presentation over the HD6XX. The HD58X will not have quite the resolution and scalability the HD6XX is capable of from the reviews of the prototype, which is another distinction between them.
The HD58X is for those who want a more exciting/less laid back HD6XX and don't care it doesn't have quite the resolution or scalability of the HD6XX.

PFN_KI'm sure they will sound great, but these are not the headphones I signed up for on the first day of the drop. I would have bought them either way, but they should have just changed the name.
As we have already concluded: Neutral signature headphones do not appeal to the masses.
I can't help but laugh at all the clowns spraying their 'expert' interpretations of the FR graphs...

PFN_K58X sounds not even close to the 580. I have a friend in Germany that got his hands on one of the early review sets and he hated the 58X. Said it sounded nothing like the other 600 series headphones and was very grainy.

MotorradI can’t help but laugh at all the ‘experts’ crying about the fact that these aren’t identical to the HD580’s/HD600’s, and that must be because Massdrop is just catering to all the Beats loving millennials.

Aja12Haven't seen anyone crying. We're all pretty stoked to be getting these cool cans for a great price, even though the spec did change to please the masses. I wasn't aware that anyone around here was into Beats, seems like the wrong place for them...even clueless millennials agree. Cheers!

MotorradHow many more neutral cans do we need, seriously? Personally, the fact that these will sound hopefully different from other Senns is a godsend. I can easily get a great pair of neutral cans anywhere but where can I get this can's signature at this cost? Just my .02 cents.

Tup3xI'm assuming the charts posted here are the most current? I know Senn mentioned changes but they seem to have been pretty mum on it even though these are about to ship in a couple of weeks.

MotorradNo clue. I just said there are a ton of "neutral" cans on the market. IEMs as well. I guess the HD660 would be close but I haven't personally heard them. I don't know the HD600 signature very well but the AKG 702/712, HiFiMan HE1000, AUDIO ZENITH PMX2, SONY MDR-MA900, etc. I guess you could call them neutral-ish since I'm sure we all have a different definition of what neutral should really sound like.

PeteMtlPete, Jay, I meant it rhetorically. I initially and immediately jumped on this drop thinking (errantly) that I was going to get a more portable update to my beloved and well-used HD600's. Clearly this is not the case anymore and I'm totally cool with that; I know they're going to get tons of head-time. I do somewhat reject the notion of an overabundance of neutral cans out there; it certainly does not seem to be the trend. For me, HD600, properly amplified, defines a neutral signature and has been my go-to studio reference for years. Jay, you could call those neutral-ish, I suppose, but those are such different headphones that I wouldn't really put them in the same category.
Soon we will know what these damn things actually sound like!
