Well, finally got my 58X and I can clearly state I like them more than the 6XX. They're faster, not as "veiled", bass is a respectable bump (just enough), and they sound like they have some life to them. Detail retrieval and soundstage sound pretty identical to me compared to the 6XX. Maybe they're a bit better but I would be splitting hairs. For me, this is how I wish the 6XX would have sounded from the get go. Swapping to them now just shows hows tame and boring they are by comparison. At one point I guess I really liked that but nowadays I need something with a more engaging sound.
Also, the grills and color scheme look better than I thought they would in real life. The glossy black is a damn fingerprint magnet but it goes so well with the grey grills, nameplate, and decals. Really a great deal at $150.

jaydunndidditCongrats on finding 58X better to your taste! Can't agree more that it's a great deal at $150. I also have both of them, but I can't tell which I like better... Hard to justify myself to keep them both because they are similar, but it's harder to let go either of them...
sparkfilmworksI think I'm going to sell my 6XX and 579. They served me well when I was starting out but my tastes seems to have changed. I'd honestly really love something like the HD 820 but that'll be years down the road when they drop in price. Maybe MD and Sennheiser will do another collabo and bring us their X version of the 700 or 800. One can always hope...

jaydunndidditPretty much how I feel going from memory of my coworker's HD6XX I demoed (which is what pushed me to get in on the HD58X last December) - the HD58X seems to fix my minor issues with the HD6XX. My HD58X just came in during lunchtime and have been listening to them since. The HD58X seems more punchy/forward than what I remember the HD6XX being, with nice highs that aren't as veiled sounding - and I'm just driving it off my Shanling M0 DAP right now, not my full dynamic rig. Next week he'll bring his HD6XX and we can compare them head to head, level matched using my TASCAM MH-8.
I will say the HD58X is right up there in listening experience with my STAX L300Ltd rig and TH-X00PH rig for me... very unique emotional experience I don't get from much any other cans, moreso than the HD6XX. The HD58X is what I would want a modded M1060 to actually sound like....the M1060 is so dull and flat sounding in comparison. The only planars I really like are Electrostats though... all magnetic planars I've heard so far are 'ehhhh' to me, Mrspeakers Aeon closed doubly so.
