Does anyone have the 660S and can compare them to the 58X and 6XX? I'm now curious to buy the 660S but they are pretty expensive. I'm also curious to try the 600 as well. Not sure I really need to have the whole lineup though. lol

Mark_MI have all the HD6xx series cans, but what I don't have are my HD580X's that I ordered early on the day the very first drop went live. Sorry for the vent, I'll post some impressions vs the other cans when I get mine on Tuesday.

OCBobNo worries. The 660S is $680 Canadian right now so that's very expensive for me. If I were to splurge on those and they were good enough then that would be end game for me. I'd sell the others and just have the 660S. That would offset at least some of the cost. However I can't see myself doing that as I love the 6XX and the 58X so far as well. In my A B testing so far the 58X is more lively than the 6XX and has more bass. The 6XX however is smoother sounding overall. Both have great clarity in their own right but in different ways. Hard to explain at least for me. Still gotta loosen the clamp a bit more on the 58X but he 6XX is just right in terms of clamp now that I've had them a few months.

Mark_MBlinq has the 660s for 399.** from what I've heard the 58x is somewhere between the 650/6xx and the 660s

Mark_MYes. Legitimate company. They may be an unofficial sennheiser reseller. I got an open box hd599 in ivory for 117.** free shipping. and they came flawless.

dwane5I purchased my HD800S' factory refurbished from an authorized Sennheiser dealer and saved myself $400. Mine came flawless as well. There are deals out there to had, but I also understand peoples hesitation to purchase used or reconditioned gear.

Mark_MMy experience with all the HD6xx series cans is you need only to wear them and the clamp will relax like your HD6XX's. I've heard others talk about storing them on a stack of books that's the same width of you head when you aren't using them to speed the process.

OCBobYeah I guess over time my 58X will loosen up. They were not as bad initially as my 6XX though. Nonetheless when swapping between them I do notice the difference a lot.
As for the deals site noted above. If those prices are in US dollars than it's not much of a deal for me given the exchange to Canadian dollars.

Mark_MSo I put 8 hours on the HD58X's and then I spent a lot of time with them last night and this morning. This morning I did a lot of A/B listening with the HD58X and HD660S on the SE side of my Jotunheim (MB DAC module). There are a lot of similarities and some differences, but both are excellent headphones. The sound of the 660S is a more neutral analytical sound.: The bass, mids, and highs all come across pretty evenly. The HD58X has more of a V-shaped sound to my ears: The bass is fuller/deeper (than ANY of the previous HD6xx series models), the mids are pulled back a little, and the highs sparkle a little more. Neither of the two sound very wide (I do own HD800S' though), but I'd say the HD660S does sound a touch wider. Both sound more open (and overall better) when run on the balanced side of the Jot. With the right amp (not a phone) both are very dynamic and quite fast. I own some Koss ESP-950 electrostats that take dynamic and fast to a whole different level. Even my HD700's are a bit faster, but when compared to the HD600/650/6XX ,the HD660S and HD58X are faster. Between the HD660S and HD58X I might argue that the HD58X is a touch faster, which could be due to the brighter highs and better lows. If you think of headphones as having 3 channels (left, middle, right) the HD660S and HD58X are more focused in the middle where the HD600, HD6XX, and HD650 are more balanced across the 3 channels. This isn't to say that imaging isn't solid: all the HD6xx headphones have great imaging. It's just that the 600S and 58X have a more forward (for lack of a better word) middle channel. Imaging is one of the main benefits of running balanced vs single-ended: In the case of all the HD6xx headphones, imaging is improved when running balanced (at least in my experience). Overall, I would argue that the HD660S has an overall cleaner sound. I think he elevated lows and highs do have an affect in that regard, but I don't have a lot of hours on the HD58X so things may change with time, and it isn't a huge difference between the two. If I did have to choose between the two I would pick the HD660S, but that's me. And if cost is an issue the HD58X is a ridiculous value. I'll reply back soon with my opinions vs the HD6XX.

OCBobThanks for the detailed reply. I'm just curious though as to what you mean by the sound being "fast".

Mark_MYou're welcome. Fast is referring to the transient response of a headphone. Transient response in headphones is how quickly a headphone can react to signal from the amp. An example would be a drum hit, or any sound that comes on or off quickly or loudly (like a vibrating string being muted) When you hear those sounds in real life there is a short moment of time where the sound comes on hard and loud for a split second or is suddenly silenced. Some headphones are better at recreating the impact or rapid decay of a sound and it adds to the realism of the headphone and makes it sound more dynamic. The fastest headphones I have are my Koss ESP-950 Electrostatics. Those things can come on faster and louder than any headphone I have personally heard. My HD700's are quite fast as well and they were the first cans I used where I really noticed how fast/dynamic they were compared to my other headphones (at the time I owned my HD600's and 650's. Amplifier design and power is also important to a good transient response. A fast headphone may not sound as fast when played off of a phone vs a quality amp, and solid state amps are generally faster than tube amps.

Mohannad13Either one would work across a wide variety of genres. The HD58X is easier to drive, has more bass, and it's cheaper. I think it's really that simple. I might give the slight edge in resolution to the HD6XX. but that's just to my ears and it's really close. The build is the same as all the HD6xx cans if you don't count added finishing. If I had to choose between the two models as my only pair of HD6xx series headphones I would choose the HD58X. Luckily, I don't have to choose.

OCBobThanks for your explanation I hope i can get all the 600 series but i need to choose one cuz i can't use them all anyway. I have tried 600 650 660 and 700 and i liked the 650 the most because of their smooth highs and clear but not boomy bass so my question is Which headphone has the nearest sound to the 58x ? I mean if the 58x has the same sound signature of the 650 but with more bass of course i will choose it. But if it was any near to the 660 more clarity but less smoothness i need to stick with the 6xx

Mohannad13Tossing out all of the mumbo-jumbo and minutiae, and coming from the most general impression of the sound signatures (like how my wife would experience them) I would say the closest to the HD6XX is the HD58X and the furthest from the HD6XX (and HD58X) is the HD660S. If you want a HD6XX with more bass I think you'd be happy with the HD58X.
