These headphones are great, don't get me wrong. The two stars stem from one thing and one thing only, which in fact was my own fault for discounting:
The open backs.
I cannot listen to these headphones anywhere. I am a student and I want to listen to music while studying. I can't listen to them in libraries, at home when ANY noise is going on, or anywhere in public. I have a roommate and cannot listen to them at night past when he has gone to bed (which is usually an hour or so at the end of the night).
This is my fault -- the information was there on this discussion board and I read it, but did not give it the attention it deserved. However, the 2 star review stands because this is unfortunately not a product I would buy again or recommend to anyone I know without extreme qualification. I WOULD buy this product again, but under different circumstances, like if I lived alone in a quiet area. The quality of sound definitely justify the price tag, but unfortunately the lived experience of using the headphones do not. I am going to resell them and look for noise cancelling headphones. Before, I was fine with a little noise coming in. Now that I've had these for a bit, I'm very sensitive to any noise coming in and I'd like perfect quiet. In that sense, I'm glad I learned that lesson about my self. Too bad these didn't work out for me.
To anyone still on the fence, I recommend thinking VERY THOROUGHLY about where you'll be listening to these headphones. I did not and have had a bad experience. I recommend them based on quality versus price, but do not recommend them for students or anyone who intends to use these anywhere besides home alone.
Additionally, they took an incredibly long time to get here. That was extremely frustrating but not the fault of Massdrop nor the headphones. Screw FedEx and USPS, though.

OutthereSo you bought open headphones, which have no noise isolation, when you wanted noise isolation. And then you still decided to write a negative review for the product even though the score is due to you buying the wrong headphones? Why? You even mentioned that it was your own fault. Why, then, would you write a review? That would be like writing a negative review for dog food because your cat didn't like it.

OutthereSeriously, I admire you accepting the blame and seeing your own fault not reading the specification of this headphones thoroughly. At least you are being honest with yourself.
However, I cannot comprehend the reasoning behind writing a negative review for a product that delivers everything it promises, regardless of your own error buying the wrong one or not paying attention to the given specs.
Keeps me wondering, who are you trying to hurt. Cause this product, Massdrop nor Sennheiser certainly do not deserve any of it.

OutthereYou do feel disappointed because you did not know what is "open back headphones" and how they work, so you give a 2 star rating to an excellent product just because you can't use the product the way it is intended to be used... Is the sound bad? Is the design bad? Neither. Double facepalm.
Besides, you do not need "noise cancelling headphones", just buy a pair of closed backs with good sound insulation, and you'll be fine.

OutthereI would recommend to rewrite your review a bit because this is a bit ridiculous of course. Just give the headphone the honest rating it deserves according to you. And then say why you don't like it because you bought the wrong type of headphone for your use case. This way it's more fair for all the people involved don't you think?

OutthereAre you serious? So you fault the headphones because don't know how to do basic research?

Outthereif this is "your fault", why does this deserve 2 stars? it's like knowing you're allergic to a food and buying it anyway. other people aren't allergic, but you rate it down only because you are.

LeowulfUnfortunately things are not that simple and it isn't exactly what the stars are there for. You can give something 3+ stars and still not recommend it. I wish I knew a more polite way to say this but anyone who rates a Beetle solely on its towing ability should not be aloud to drive in the first place. That is like me giving one of my monitors 2 stars because it doesn't have speakers despite knowing they didn't have speakers when I bought them. The picture is great and 144hz is nice but lets trash it in a review because it does exactly what I knew it would do and not make sound.

OutthereIt is hard to say this at a friendly matter, but you lack common sense when it comes to rating. Also you are a student, you should know how to read.

OutthereThis is a very unfair review. At the very least, this review should be transferred to "Discussions" to remove the poor rating.

OutthereA review should help other people to decide for the product or another. So, you decide to let the ratings go down because of your ignorance In hp designs... it’ like a complaint because a freezer don’t cook also the food...

OutthereI am more than a bit disappointed in your less-than-celebratory review of the Massdrop/Sennheiser HD58x Jubilee stereophonic headphones. Prior to actually reading your exhaustively critical words I did, in fact, take note that you'd allotted a mere 2 Stars to the otherwise much lauded audio apparatus. Therefore, I unquestioningly knew from the outset that what lay ahead of me could only be some of the most audaciously pompous jibber-jabber since Grandpa Simpson shook his haggard, liver-spotted fist in condemnation of all motorized vehicular transportation. And yet, tragically, I persisted. Thusly, I forged ahead and, the poor fool that I am, fully immersing myself in the putrid rancid sweltering swamp of your vituperative screed.
So, in spite of my better judgement I've read your ill-tempered, sour declaration of dissent and now I am a lesser man for it. You and your perverse, petulant put-down of the universally cherished HD58x Jubilee headphone have smeared an indelible stain upon my tender soul. Your reckless raging thesis has invaded the deepest recesses of my heretofore innocent psyche like a pilfering rabid rodent whose fetid feces is now festering there for all eternity, ultimately rendering me a ravaged withered worthless husk. I am dead. I do not blame you, alas, it was my own dumb fault...

OutthereI usually keep an eye out for negative reviews, because they tend to highlight possible problems. I saw the two stars and suddenly was curious what serious problem promoted the low rating. This is very poor conduct on your behalf. It's like you bought a sports car and then you rate it crap because you can't fit your Ikea furniture in the trunk. You go hiking and complain what a lousy destination it is because you couldn't surf. You buy a server computer and then you complain you can't take it with you on a plane and work while you travel. The two star rating isn't representative of the product. You chose to buy something that doesn't fit your needs, and nor was it ever intended to. Maybe you should reconsider your rating, just saying (and putting it nicely, too).

OutthereIn response to literally everyone:
I appreciate the effort you all put in to destroy this review. I must say I have never before been insulted in such as creative ways as "pompous jibber-jabber since Grandpa Simpson shook his haggard, liver-spotted fist in condemnation of all motorized vehicular transportation" and "vituperative screed." So thank you.
There are around 550 reviews of this product and it still maintains its 5 star rating with my negative review. The reason I gave 2 stars as opposed to 5, 1, or even 3 is because I wanted it to be identifiable as a negative experience with the product. I couldn't do 3, 4, or 5, which are neutral or positive, but also not 1 because that's even more unfair than 2. So I did 2.
This is a WARNING to other people with sugar in their eyes. Like I said, I was warned about the open backs, but did not take it seriously--the idea is that, if anyone reads my review who was in my situation, they would not make the same mistake. Therefore, I think my review is still worthwhile to the community as a whole. I am making a point that is totally valid and important to this product; I am making this point in the hopes that I will "be who you needed when you were younger," i.e. I'm speaking to other people who are about to make this same mistake.
I am not contending with you that this is--very slightly--unfairly hurting Sennheiser. However, in my opinion, it is still valuable, and I will not change it.
Best,
Outthere

Outthereyou're pretty stupid to justify your garbage review. This is a WARNING for people who read this and think it's a legitimate review. Save your shitty reviews for yelp ('THERE ARE NO VEGAN OPTIONS IN THIS BBQ RESTAURANT blah blah blah 1/5 stars')

Outtherequote from the description "it may be best-suited for quieter home and office environments" so this shows that you did not even read the description before buying $150 headphones
