Using the chat adapter for the controller allows for much easier control of volume, such as chat/game audio balance, but at it's loudest it's sometimes just not loud enough. Using an amp (I have the original Astro Mixamp + Xbox One adapter) works better, but you're subjected to the quality of the controller cable.
Using an amp really fleshes out the sound. It's a fantastic experience, and I really do love the headset more and more. The mic quality is pretty amazing, not just for voice transmission, but for ambient sound cancellation. My old mic would pick up the sounds of a fan running in my room, but the new one doesn't. Love it.
