Without opening up the big can of worms about local knife laws, I am curious how authorities determine blade length. The description for this knife lists the blade length at 2.9", but if I measure the length of the sharpened edge on my Delica, it comes to just around 2.5", which conveniently appears to be the limit in California for certain having on school grounds and campuses. From what I've read, longer folding blades are fine everywhere else, but some local jurisdictions have their own rules (e.g. Sacramento bans blades longer than 3"). That's leaves us with a hodgepodge of rules to navigate, but at least 2.5" seems to be okay just about everywhere that one is likely to be (except I suppose, places like government agencies and on planes). I'd like to get one of these for my son when the drop opens up again, so I am interested if the length of this blade really would be considered 2.5" or less.

inventbotWhether the blade is 2.5" or 3.0" doesn't really matter as much as the officer's discretion, if you're concerned about the technical legality of your knife's blade length. Most cops aren't going to break out a ruler to see if you're within the limit, so if your 2.5" knife is deemed unacceptable on campus then you're probably out of luck. I actually don't know of any school campus that allows blades of ANY length in CA - but perhaps college campuses? In any case, you're going to be at the mercy of the cop's discretion, and I'd be willing to bet bet if the cop wants your knife, he's going to get your knife. That said - I was once pulled over in Los Angeles with a Chris Reeve Sebenza on me, handed it over to the officer when asked if I had any weapons on me, and it was promptly returned to me when the traffic stop was concluded. No issues at all, but ymmv.

inventbotBlade length is measured from the fulcrum point to the tip of the blade.

inventbotThe length limit only applies to fixed blades - also on college campuses but I figure that's what you mean by school. Folding knives can be any length for carry at college campuses - as long at the college doesn't have a no weapons clause. In which case, you wouldn't be breaking a knife law but rather a trespassing law at that point.

K-ozDragonKnife blade length laws are different from state to state and even local county laws can be different within the state. They can and do apply to folders and fixes blades.
