I ordered a second prism during the black Friday sale and was initially disappointed when it arrived. The detent was so weak I was unable to flick it open and the blade would just fall open. I immediately submitted a support ticket and while waiting for a responce I looked closer and noticed the detent ball in the lockbar was not engaging the the hole that's drilled in the blade. So I disassembled and found debris in the detent hole and after I cleared it, it works well. This knife has a noticeably weaker detent then my first prism but it is acceptable. I gave my first prism a 5 star rating and I'm giving this one a 4 star rating.

Gunnersmate2Good catch with the debris in the detent hole. A weak detent can be so frustrating!

Gunnersmate2Can you shake your original one open? I noticed with mine I can but it requires a good vigorous shake. Not 100% ideal but I'm unsure what I would be doing to accidentally shake it that hard.

BknguyenMy original prism will shake open if I do it just right and hard enough. The one I just got flicks open with a gentle flick of the wrist. It honestly feels like a completely different knife.

Gunnersmate2I’ve never taken the Prism apart but I have taken other knives apart that had weak detents and I was able to place steady inward pressure on the lockbar and bend it so that when I put the knife back together, the lockbar exerted a bit more pressure on the blade and actually made the detent quite a bit stronger.

DougFLA123I did that a little on this when I had it apart to clean out the detent hole. It helped a little but the major problem was the debris in the detent hole. I wish I would have taken a picture of it. It ended up being a metal shaving that was perfectly lodged in the detent hole preventing the lockbar from dropping into it.

Gunnersmate2If the detent ball is going in the detent hole and it shakes out easily, I still say take it apart and really push that lockbar way over, slowly, gently, with steady strong pressure, and it should make for a stronger detent. I have to admit, it’s a little scary.

DougFLA123I have a (completely different brand) knife with a detent that is super hard... as in, I cannot deploy it via thumbstuds with one hand, and it’s still fairly tough to deploy with two. However, it is a button lock knife, and if I hold the button I can pretty easily wrist-flick it open. Suggestions?

EvshrugThat’s interesting. It might be easier for me to give a good answer if you could tell me the make and model. Is it possible that the pivot is a little too tight? Have you tried backing off the torx pivot screw a little bit?

DougFLA123Well, the Prism is a much nicer knife... a bit beyond my luxuries budget atm. The knife I’m having issue with right now is the Tangram Vector. It’s not my only knife, but it is my most recent. With the thumbstud so close to the pivot, it’s like there isn’t much leverage in addition to the strong detent. I’ll have to try loosening the pivot: I saw that Kizer states disassembly would void warranty, so I was set to return the knife if Kizer/Tangram support couldn’t help, but they said it wouldn’t void the warranty for me to mess with the pivot screw. I guess that means it’s not fixed with red locktight or something.

Gunnersmate2Yep I have two prisms as well, one has a PERFECT detent, the other prism has a stronger detent and also the lockbar sits right against the blade when closed, resulting in a "clink" when closing, compared to the other prism where there is the tiniest gap between lock bar and blade when closed and closes virtually silently. Actually I don't mind that they are different, would be boring to have two the same. I also have Terzoula CTF, that needed the finger of Zeus to flip it open, but wearing it in has made it softer, and I've actually come to like it, as more force to open combined with the weight of the blade results in a very violent opening inertia which can be fun. My Brad Zinker Dogtooth has a perfect detent similar to my first prism, can't shake it open, but flicks open with EASE, which suits its light and small size. I'm very happy with all my knives and their different personalities.

EvshrugNick Shabazz did a review and a disassembly video of this knife on YouTube. I don’t know if you’ve ever watched them before but I’ll put them here in case you want to see them. If you’re unfamiliar with taking knives apart, watching a video can help a lot. EvshrugIf you have a torx bit set, try backing off the pivot screw a little bit. If that doesn’t work, if you watch the disassembly video, you’ll see that the pivot is on washers, maybe all you need is some oil on those washers.

DougFLA123Yeah, and they used white “permanent” lock-tight. I probably should have returned it and kept saving.

EvshrugThe videos show it not being very difficult to flip open, so it’s odd that yours is so difficult. You weren’t able to loosen up the pivot?

DougFLA123Nick Shabazz says at the beginning of his disassembly video that the Vector used some serious Loctite that was really strong, and he almost decided not to do the video at all. He had to switch to a driver with serious leverage. Also, the Tangram warranty card states that disassembly voids the warranty. I haven’t tried yet, but at this point if I strip the screws it won’t be worse than it is.

EvshrugYours might be different than his...maybe not as difficult. Slow, steady, strong pressure, making sure the bit doesn’t slip out, will probably do it. It might be worth a try if it’s that hard to flip open.

EvshrugNicks test samples are not always representative of what you get, in his review of the Prism he said he could not open it as it was loctited good, but the two Prisms I have had no loctite whatsoever and were a breeze to open.
