$150 knife made in China? No thanks, grab a spyderco para 2 instead. You can talk about quality until you are blue in the face but if I'm paying premium prices, I want it to go to an employee in the states, not overseas. More money in their pockets means more money in my pockets eventually. I understand that this is a cool looking knife and a midtech made in USA is probably 500 bucks and a full custom much more than that. But it is just this kind of thinking: faster, newer, cheaper that created the trade deficit we face now. This used to not be the case with knives, where USA made knives were readily available. But in the last 5 years, there has been a surge away from the States because everyone has to have knives with crazy titanium handles with ball bearings. Anyways, long rant over, support local knife makers and companies.

bin31zYour point about wanting to support business in one country vs. another is something many people have strong feelings about. I will even say that you've been more articulate and specific in giving the reasons for your belief than we sometimes read.
FWIW, I just wanted to point out that Mr. Terzuola and the 100+ employees of Massdrop are all based right here in the USofA. So is Crucible Industries, maker of the CPM-S35VN steel used for the blade. By purchasing this knife, a portion of your money does go to WE Knife - but a portion also goes to support the craftsman, producers, and suppliers who make this collaboration possible.

JonasHeinemanWas it not possible at all for this knife to be US made? How do companies like Kershaw keep manufacturing local without exorbitant prices? Like I understand your point about massdrop jobs but more and more, America is turning into a purely service orientated economy, where we are just administrator and managers without doing the actual manufacturing. You do know that Crucible Industries was a consolidation of 13 crucible steel companies which used to employ hundreds of thousands of employees. Now they are struggling to stay solvent (bankrupt and bought out in 2009). Without support, the knife industry will go the same route with only a few companies offering knives made in the US at outlandish prices. I'm just disappointed because massdrop is supposed to be this enthusiast driven platform that caters to a niche market but most of the items offered aren't really that special or unique.

bin31zThis was probably the most articulated and well-written comment on this particular subject I've ever read here in the blades section. Not that it was anything more than a discussion of the subject, but I'll say it anyways. MATCH! BIN31Z

TacotimeI feel very strongly about this subject because the change to overseas manufacturing in this sector is happening before my eyes. We aren't talking about the electronics industry or clothing industry, which made the change in 70's -80's. We are talking about now! This is an area that consumers can have an impact on by voting with our wallets now. Let's be honest, we are talking about 100+ dollar knives here, these are not essential day to day items. If you can't afford a sebenza, that's fine, there are plenty of options out there. But if you are thinking about getting 2 Ferrum Forge, or Reate or WE knives over a sebenza, I don't think of MORE as being BETTER in that case. Anyways, I just get frustrated when I see 1000+ pre-orders for some new fancy solid titanium, ball bearing foreign made knife here on Massdrop just because it ticks all the "must have features" boxes. Milled titanium handle, titanium clip, flipper, ball bearings etc etc. At the same time, Spyderco's titanium framelock Military with carbon fiber and S90V is not even sold out. Yeah, its not a solid titanium handle, doesn't have bearings, not a new design but this isn't beanie babies or pokemon or a new iphone, its a knife!

bin31zCheap Kershaws are made in China, though some of the nicer ones are made in the US. It's also worth pointing out here that Kershaw is a wholly-owned subsidiary of a foreign company. Not that I care, but I also don't see why a trade deficit is a problem per se.

bin31zI trust we knives quality and bobs decision on working with massdrop. I own all kinds of knives manufactured all over the world. Doesnt really matter where it comes from as long as bob gets the final say its his design/decision to allow this to happen. High quality for a decent price. USA is just more expensive to live in so Usa made knives will cost more. Just buy the knife and enjoy it. Buying a Usa made knife doesnt make you more patriotic or more American and wont help knife makers with huge taxes to pay off either. Pride vs reality folks.
