Should have had the CF version as an option during the initial drop instead of adding it after the drop is finished.

massdrop01Yeah what the hell is this about? Upgraded versions shouldn't be available right away, it's aggravating to finally get a knife you've waited six months for only to learn two weeks later that the prettier version is just immediately available. Oh well, I like the CTF enough to get the carbon fiber one eventually, but not enough to make it happen right now.

OmniseedI think it's likely one of their upsell strategies. It's likely that they will make more sales for the CF version after released, now that it's immediately available it has lower barrier of entry for people to purchase. If they release CF version during initial drop they might have made less sales as some people that woulda bought the standard version would've converted to CF version instead, and the price may have made the wait not worth it.

massdrop01To an extent I think they should have a little breathing room on it as a sales tactic, because the CTF did drop at a time when there were no shipped embellished knives, and only the Falcon Wing (possibly the two milled Crux as well) was an actual drop. They've tried to add more options over the past 18 months on each of these knives, and for the most part they have created good alternative offerings for each one. I just wish they had offered an upgrade to initial buyers instead of just saying nothing about it until they're on sale right after the preordered first productions shipped. We told them we really wanted to see a carbon fiber version of the CTF when the drop went live, it is a clumsy move on Massdrop's part to just have it made as an unannounced part of the first production. I like their products and the new designs are compelling, so I am giving them the benefit of the doubt, which is that they are doing their best and this is just an example of clumsiness rather than a sales tactic. In their defense, this community can be a little bit psychotic if you had to treat us all as equally reasonable and valued members.

OmniseedI’m going to add that MD has a niche business model. Where as a knife store has to put up its own capital for an exclusive knife and take the risk that their customers would buy them MD takes a better approach. We the investors put up the capital for an exclusive patch and credit/discount. On this drop i cheered for the grumblers and we got a small refund too. Overall I’m happy how it turned out. Am i happy enought to get another one in CF at full price? Probably not but now MD takes the risk that lot of you will. I couldn’t believe that this was a WE knife. Compared to the earlier framelocks this didn’t need an enormous amount of pressure to open and the lock didn’t have the usual hair engagement.
