Will this work with Stax electrostatics? Fro the photo I'm guessing not but would live to be wrong.

VigrithThanks for the info. Guess I'm not upgrading my Stax.

TerryNYCare you kidding me? since when an electrostat amp can run along with typical amp to have all-in-one solution box? do you even know what electrostatic is?

gearofwar113yes, i do. all that is required is a separate connection that provides necessary voltage and the supply circuitry for this. I was friendly with Julius Futterman, inventor of OTL amplifier in 1953. He built a headphone amp version that did just that. Sold the design to Stax later btw. So for an additional $25 in parts THX could have done this too.

TerryNYC"sold the design to Stax later" , Have seen Julius's works but have never seen any Stax's amps fall in line with any of his.

TerryNYCElectrostatic's have no standards and the amps are typically paired with the headphones so.... how THX/Massdrop was going to make it work also for $25 is beyond me...

gearofwar113the famous Stax tube amp was a modified version of his design, and you are very unlikely to have seen it as it was expensive and rare even in Japan when in production in the late 1970s. I have no idea if the mid-1990s units are related, although they probably are, and to answer your original question I've owned Stax since the 1970s and various electrostatic speakers since the 1980s.

TerryNYCObviously people are after T1 and T2 because they are the best Stax has to offer; even T2 went out of production, people won't be missing much what came before.

Jimster480Stax invented the electrostatic headphone in 1960 and has been the gold standard and most popular since. So it's not very difficult to make an amp that caters to that market as the "standards' are well-known. If you don't comprehend this some time with a good reference Self, Cordell, etc may help.

TerryNYCYes some consider electrostatics to be the gold standard... doesn't really matter since they are each over $1000 and 99% of the market has no interest in them. There are a couple of budget electrostatics that have come out over the years.... they are literally nothing special.

gearofwar113As I said, I believe the later models were based on the same design because that would make sense electronically, however I've never bothered to look at them to see if they are OTL or not. I stopped doing tubes shortly after J Futterman's death in 1984 or 1984.

Jimster480Your knowledge of electrostatics is limited. Stax systems including the driver start at $600 or so. Your comment also has nothing to do with your original assertion.

TerryNYCYep, they do start that low. Except that those have horrible reviews, and typically have poor build quality and a sound you can get from any other headphone...

Jimster480I don't know nor care what reviews you read. You obviously have zero experience with electrostatics. We live in egalitarian times and everyone is entitled to an opion. It is much better however when opions are based on factual knowledge not fluff. Please consider our dialogue terminated.

TerryNYCBecause back in the day people didn't make crap up? It seems you are doing the same today.
Take care
