Kyo9999It's a different kind of amp. I've never liked Class-H Amps, but I have heard prototypes of THX AAA models and they are interesting enough that the "objectivist" in me will buy in to this. The low THD and linearity is real. Ignore the clowns who can't get past THX being 'home theater'. If you have not experimented with quality headphone amps, this is probably not the place to start. I own a Cavalli LC2 and they will definitely sound different; 'better' is up to your ears, not mine.

Kyo9999I agree with @Motorrad about it being up to you what's better or not, but the THX Certification on it makes me think it will sound 'V' shaped. That's louder bass and high treble with recessed mids. For movies and gaming, that's great, but if you want to listen to music you might find your ears bleeding. I say its just better to find amp that's more flat and buy headphones that fit what you want to hear.

joshy_bennettincorrect. There is no THX 'certification' here...no THX signature sound. Have you even read what this is? seriously...

joshy_bennettIf you can't read the specs well enough to understand what "Frequency response: + 0.01 dB / - 0.01 dB 20 Hz–20 kHz; + 0.05 dB / - 0.10 dB 10 Hz–80 kHz" means, then yeah, it's probably not for you...just not for the reason you think.

mrvcoThis isn't just a THX decal. It's a new division called THX Technology. AAA is for music, games, VR, and even playback of those super-uncanny binaural recordings that'll make you look behind to see if you're alone in the room. It's the best amplifier for your ears, regardless of what you're listening to. Effectively the lowest distortion and noise you can get. Like a wire with gain and a smooth as butter volume knob.

joshy_bennettHi @joshy_bennett. It's not THX-Certified. It's THX AAA Technology. It will sound completely transparent and neutral. See Frequency Response specs - that's about as flat as science allows. Frequency response: + 0.01 dB / - 0.01 dB 20 Hz–20 kHz; + 0.05 dB / - 0.10 dB 10 Hz–80 kHz

AndrewMasonThank you for the clarification. I had to go check other sources to help myself understand, but thank you for your professional response. Also, is the dac/amp on Monoprice (https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=24459) from the same team, and is there anywhere I can find the specs for that product?
Feb 27, 2018
joshy_bennettHi @joshy_bennett . Compared to the Massdrop 789, the Monoprice 788: -uses the same AAA technology -has less output current/voltage/power -includes a DAC selected by the Monoprice team.
So it depends on what you're looking for.
