Anyone dared try powering this with a Voltaic V88 or similar 24V lithium ion battery supply? The V88 can output 24V 3.5A, which exceeds the capabilities of the included switching 24V 1.8A supply. Surely it would void warranty (with what proof?) but it'd be interesting to know if it introduces issues or I can freely use the amp out in the middle of nowhere, heh. Technically, I really don't see why it wouldn't work! It would be interesting to know the safe supported DC input voltage range of the THX AAA 789.

jcadduonoAmperage will be drawn as needed, so should be no issue HOWEVER note that audiosciencereview saw no mains leakage or power problems. The simple brick's power is filtered well. There's no upgrade path here :) don't let anyone mislead you otherwise. Stick with the default brick, no warranty issues possible that way, either.

jcadduonoThe adapter outputs a regulated 24.0 Vdc, +/- 5%.

AndrewMasonBut does the THX 789 take a wider range DC input? If so, what's the range? For example, my DAC comes with a 15Vdc power adapter (regulated) but works fine with 12Vdc battery...

verifonixIt's not that I want to replace the power supply, it's that sometimes I'd like to take my headphones down to the beach or on the road where there are no outlets. ;) This amp is so powerful at such a relatively small size, and appears to be quite efficient, so with the V88 I'd dare call it portable.

jcadduonoOh I see. Well Andrew will probably recommend you a regulated supply but if you're feeling ballsy I suppose you can try it out, if it's not working out the current protection circuit will turn on all the time (red light), if it does work it will keep showing the simple white light.
Music1978Unfortunately no.

jcadduonoHey guys I finally got my Voltaic V88 (USB-C PD version) in, and amazingly, it works awesomely! I switched it to 24V, and the DC power cable it comes with doesn't even need an adapter on it, it's just a double sided male cable and goes straight from the battery to the amp's DC 24V input. Bonus #1: I can even plug in my Topping D50's USB power cable to the V88 at the same time as it powers the amp, so it is actually powering my full stack! Bonus #2: It has full pass-through power capability! You can literally take the power brick that came with the Massdrop 789 and plug it into the Voltaic V88's 18-25V DC Input (same connector barrel) Bonus #3: I now only have 1 cable plugged into the wall, and I can pick up my stack and go, all I have to do is unplug the 789's power cable from the V88 :))))))
