An improved version of the HPA-2, Matrix Audio’s highly regarded DAC/amp combo, the HPA-2 Classic updates the internals and adds a more streamlined appearance. It features a low- and high-gain selection at the back, making it an ideal pairing for both lower- and higher-impedance headphones. For those adventurous audiophiles into modding, the unit’s op-amps are interchangeable, giving you the possibility of rolling in other op-amps if you’d like. Equipped with the popular Cirrus Logic CS4398 DAC chip, the HPA-2 Classic offers support for 24-bit/192kHz PCM and 2.8MHz/5.6MHz DSD. Details include a knurled volume knob, a headphone protection function, and a mirror-like gloss finish on the front panel.

One Head-Fi reviewer says, “This is a great-looking, well-built amp/DAC combo that would stand proud as an all-in-one desktop solution, or as a lone headphone amp fed by another source. It is perfect for driving hard-to-drive full-size headphones effortlessly with control, body, and refinement. It may not be the most versatile amp out there, nor is it the flattest-sounding amp, but is does offer a slightly full sound which I find works very well with the Beyerdynamic T1, Fischer Audio FA-003ti, and others. Overall a great device … I can highly recommend it.”
