Can someone who knows their stuff comment on the blade steel? Never heard of this one before. 4 inch blade isn't for me though.

zsoumya It depends...there's 2 different steels mentioned in the description.
5Cr steel I wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole. It's soft and it's only redeeming value would be the high corrosion resistance.
10Cr steel (as mentioned in the list) looks pretty good on paper. Other vendors sell this knife with the steel listed as M390 which is not just pretty good but and excellent steel.
10Cr might just be the designation for that particular steel in China.

zsoumya The steel designation 10Cr15MoV refers to 1% C, 15% Cr and some Mo & V which gives it remarkably similar composition as VG10 - which is a decent cutlery stainless to say the least. This notation is used with Chinese steels, obviously, as this is Chinese maker - but to be honest, I'd trust them to do better job with local steel than with imported Japanese VG10. I believe the 5Cr...in the text is a typo (I've seen this knife elsewhere and it's 10Cr15MoV)

LX_EmergencyI wouldn't even consider this knife until someone can confirm the knife steel. CPM-D2, S35VN, or M390 would all be winners for me. But I might try the 10cr15mov at this price if it were confirmed.

aitmikeI totally understand. I wouldn't buy a knife without knowing what it's made of either. Which means someone from Massdrop needs to chime in on whether it was a typo or not.

zsoumyaIt's possible that 10cr15mov is the Chinese designation (or Chinese produced version) of VG-10, a popular upper-entry level Japanese stainless steel. I've found several sites discussing VG-10 when I searched for 10cr15mov and 10cr15comov, and the designation might be it's alloy content: If 10 is 1.0% Carbon, cr15 is 15% Chromium, and "comov" is small amounts of Cobalt, Molybdenum, and Vanadium, then the content is very similar to VG-10.
Edit: Baarbro beat me to the punch :P

LX_EmergencyI've only seen M390 used on the frame lock version of this design, if you've seen M390 on the liner lock version I'd like to see that so please post a link.

zsoumyaWell then, VG-10 equivalent blade steel for $80. Doesn't seem like a good deal, especially when there is a current drop of ESEE Avispa in D2 steel that can be had for $37. Also, in general, Kizers and Spyderco VG-10s are usually available in less than 80 bucks.

LX_EmergencyThis is the budget version, not in M390. There is a much more expensive version made with real M390 however.

JonasHeinemanAh right, that might make sense. I haven't delved heavily into this brand so you're probably right. Didn't do more than a quick google really.

pyrobunnyGotcha! Still seems like an ok deal though. Even for the budget version.

aitmikeThe only one of those steels you will find in a sub $100 knife is the D2, with the exception of a very small number of Kizer knives using S35VN. There are no M390 knives in that price range that I'm aware of. Also, I suspect Maxace is producing a higher quality knife than Kizer.
