Crafted in Seki City—Japan’s cutlery capital—the Mcusta MC-1 Basic Series combines the functionality of an all-around blade with the aesthetics of a gentleman’s folder. Slim and unobtrusive, the knife weighs just 3.4 ounces, yet it measures nearly 8 inches long to tackle more strenuous tasks Read More
Update on this drop...I bought the Damascus with Rosewood. Blade is gorgeous, came plenty sharp, overall fit and finish looked great right out of the box. I like the ergonomics, blade profile, and the aesthetics (this is far more "gentleman folder" than "tactical") and would recommend the brand to interested parties. However...
Fast forward a few weeks of occasional carry and lots of fiddling: the middle screw in the grip loosened and fell out. Thankfully I found the tiny little bugger, but I don't have the right tool (tiny star wrench) to tighten it properly. I'll buy the right thing, but it's irksome that I need to.
Additionally, the rosewood scale behind the pocket clip has developed a small crack extending well past the first screw, probably as a result of me flicking the blade open and the thumb stud impacting the scale when the blade reaches full extension. It likely won't be an issue as both sides of the crack are secured, but still...what the hell.
All said, I'd buy another Mcusta knife, but I'd opt for synthetic scale materials for long-term durability.
Received mine last week and am very happy about the look of the knife. The quince burl scales are beautiful and the blue anodizing on the pivot and the thumbstud is a great touch. Out of the box it was shaving sharp, perfectly centered with no play, and the grind flawless. The pivot is irritating though. The action was extremely stiff and required two hands to open. That's no big deal, I often tweak the tension on the pivot anyway, but the pivot isn't captured and spins. I had to side load the blade while open to wedge the pivot a little bit so it wouldn't spin while I unscrewed it. I got the opening action the way I like it, but the closing is still a bit stiff. Other more picayune cons: the clip is too big and shiny for the knife in my opinion and the width of the blade is a little too narrow and (very) slightly out of proportion to the handle, but both of those are apparent from the pics so I knew what I was getting. Overall, I'm extremely satisfied with the purchase, I just love that burl.
jhoppsThe MC-1 is probably one of my all-time favorite knives. Just spectacular for a mass made blade. Rivals many hand made knives, at a fraction of the price.
oh no my first massdrop and I may be getting the wrong item?.... I ordered damascus with ebony and if I don't get it... I am gonna politely ask for the correct one (the first time)
I had one of these a couple of years back, I think it was same model, and I had to return it because the pivot screw interfered with the pocket clip; my pocket wouldn't slide fully into the clip. I tried tightening the screw down, which worked in as much as I could slide it fully into the clip, but then the blade wouldn't open. I returned it for a refund. A shame as it was/is a beautiful knife.
Do these have a similar issue does anyone know?
I haven't heard anything and cannot seem to find much on any type of repair. It's frustrating because I love the knife overall and the missing chunk of the handle really diminishes the whole thing for me.
Received mine yesterday - no issues out of the box. However, one day in, opening the blade suddenly grinds at the pivot point from about 45 degrees all the way to completely open. You can really feel the friction as it grinds open audibly.
Anyone else encounter this problem or have a recommended solution?
JonTI find it amusing that the email could have been penned by captain obvious himself. Also failing to acknowledge that it has been radio silence for nearly a week seems a strange choice by mass drop.
