Vendor here. Thanks for the interest! Yes the plates rely on their own springiness, but the metal is carved in such a way that the plate is held firm (cannot "jump out" of the metal plate by itself or even when pulled without bending). There are multiple plates because when one first installs one and if they bend it too much, they can break, which would be very frustrating. So we figured, lets offer spares. Once installed they never break, or if installed / removed multiple times. It's a great use case to carry it flat; that said, the object is quite small even when the plate is in. The paper offered is hand-made in France specifically for us, but of course any blotting paper would work; you would just need to cut it to the same dimensions. Hope this helps. Emmanuel
