Congrats you lucky bastards! Although I do feel slightly sorry for the HD800 winner who now needs a good amp for it.

ZALHERAYeah, that's definitely a double edged sword. I keep getting told HD800 is extremely picky when it comes to amps/sources. Nothing like winning $1,500 headphones only to need to spend $5,000 in equipment to use it LOL
Random curiosity questions, will all the winners be getting 1099 tax forms on the MSRP value of their winnings (especially the higher end models)? Nothing is free in this world. Any type of lottery/drawing/sweepstake are subject to taxes...

LxJLthrThat "you need an expensive amp to drive the HD800 properly" is mostly head-fi mentality. I have expensive headphones (Beyer T1, LCD-2) and drive them with a FiiO E09K and they are just fine. As long as the power's there and the amp doesn't have certain characteristics that bug you, a cheaper amp should be enough.

ShiranaiI agree that Head-Fi has it is own mentality. And I agree that personal listening preferences are very relative. I was saying that getting an awesome pair of amp-picky headphones might lead down the rabbit hole of chasing the perfect paring that might (or might not) lead to equally expensive source equipment purchasing....
...Also one can also very easily say that "you need ludicrously expensive headphone to get 'just fine/enough' of a sound" a mostly Head-Fi mentality as well :P But to each their own :)

tehveggiethat won't cut it. check out the hd800's thread on head-fi and read impressions about pairings there, and probably ask what people recommend *for your budget*. you don't have to break the bank to *enjoy* your headphones, but you'll have to break it in order to drive them to their full potential, but you probably don't have trained ears like people over there have, and won't hear be able to tell the differences between a $1k+ amp and a $300 one (just keep that in mind).
on head-fi, its all about getting the best sound, and since you usually get what you paid for (and since high end audio equipment are expensive), the mentality over there looks like its all about breaking the bank. if you read impressions threads there (i don't know what about the hd800) you'll see people try very often to mod their headphones in order to get more out if them - they always crave for more.
congrats and enjoy your prize!

Baraa90What is interesting is that the typical HeadFi person does not have trained ears. You find lots of parroting going on. One person with a high post count says something, then it becomes inviolate law that is repeated over and over. The general belief is that if it costs more, it has to be better. Sometimes true, often not. So often someone asks a question about something, say a portable amp and has a budget of maybe $100. Before the thread is done, he is told that if he doesn't get the XYZ amp for $600, his headphones will suck. Anyway, that is how poor unsuspecting folks get sucked into the death spiral which is upgradeitis.... Not necessarily always wanting better, just always needing to get the next best thing. It really is something that the psychologists would lable as some kind of disorder.

Baraa90Edit: Actually I'd rather avoid any misunderstanding/arguments with how I perceive head-fi. But my opinion would be that it's certainly not worth dropping that much money for an amp for the headphones. Sure, the higher quality amps could help but not cost-efficiently.

MandrakeThat's why i emphasized "for your budget". What i forgot to emphasize, though, is that people should only care about impressions of those who compared different amps/dacs themselves, and not listen to those who tried 1 amp/dac , found it great, and then started claiming its better than other amps/dacs based only on stuff they read.
I have a budget (50$) portable amp , and Schiit Magni 2 Uber. Can i tell the difference between the 2? yes, easily! (the latter is better , obviously) . Does that mean i don't enjoy the portable amp on the go? Not at all! I love it! So in my opnion, one should stick to his budget, unless there is something that's much better for a little more.

MrEngeniousThen I totally agree with you, the higher you go in price , the least cost-effective it becomes (that's why i told him he'll have to break the bank in order to drive the hd800 to their full potential, yet he can enjoy them without breaking it). One should find that sweetspot between cost and value while taking into account his budget.
