Can someone help me understand pros and cons of Stereo vs 7.1 virtual headset? Speaking from personal experience is most appreciated.

SiranKariWith a stereo headset, while you're playing a game and say a car drives by you from behind on your right to in front of you on your left, you'll mostly just hear it just go from right to left, with a little volume change for distance. The stereo means only two sides produce sound. With 7.1 the sound will come from seven different points. So you'll know where the car was the entire time it drove by with much more precision. Or you'll know exactly where footsteps are coming from depending on what you play/use your headphones for. I used to use stereo because they were waaaay cheaper but once I used my buddies 7.1's and played rainbow six siege I couldn't go back. Hope this helps.

BowandaroYes thank you very much. Bee dileberating over couple of options for the next headset. I'm rocking a pair of HyperX Cloud 2's right now, which are fantastic, but because of the nature of the headphones, I can't mess with audio levels I'd like to tweak, so I am pretty sure I'll be switching to ASUS Strix Wireless when I do switch.

SiranKarithe big majority of headsets use just TWO drivers and you only have TWO ears.
the big difference between stereo and 7.1 in headsets is simply the software enhancements.
in general the Game Engine would do most of the work in telling you where the source of the sound is coming from, thus making a good stereo headset much better than a mediocre 7.1 headset.
in short, better get a high quality stereo headset.

OWsemiNo it isnt... the 7.1 filter is just a filter. In most cases u will be able to notice heavy sound leaking between the channels in 7.1 mode.
Its also affects the quality of the suorce material in a very bad way, making things sound like u r in a big metal room.
It does enhance the "spacious" feel and make environments feel bigger and deeper. But at what cost?!

OWsemiI could hear this said distirtion at all three price points.
I have a "low end 7.1" hyperX cloud2 which does a nice job of that filter
I tested it on the logitech g933 which are considered as a mid-high price point... they did a terrible job of simulating 7.1 and messed up the spectrum both at dolby and dts surround.
And i have heared it on the test rig on "hardware cunnucks" youtube channel on a very high end dac amp designed for gaming... it did well but didt blow me away and it also had that issue.

LiadGAre you a gamer or an audiophile, because i think we are looking at this from different perspectives, on the one hand (me) i am looking at it from a pretty heavy gaming perspective. I play alot of PUBG and i value the ability to hear where the enemies are located. But on the other hand you are looking at it from an audiophile perspective where i can certaily see your point. I have tested very high end surround headsets through an amp and the sound of it is much better but the cost is much larger. Headset or gpu? You decide

OWsemiGamer... heavy gaming indeed.
On pubg is messing up the ability to pinpoint enemies at a close diatance but helps spotting people from a distance...
It just amplifies the spectrum of th ambiance and sounds that are far away from you.
Im no audiophile... but most 7.1 filters are plain shitness to me

LiadGAND headsets with multiple drivers per ear usually do that for frequency range clarity. For example: IEMs sometimes have a separate bass and “treble/mid” driver in each ear for more accurate reproduction of those frequencies (not for multiple dimensions 😂).
