So, to the experts on here that own the gl2, What do they compare with in terms of other great headphones like the hd600, Monolith m565 or the m1060 etc?

TonyRizoI find them about average for genres like EDM or hip hop, but they are really amazing with acoustic guitars and female vocals. The treble is slightly bright, but in addition to the speed of the higher frequencies it just gives vocals and instruments an incredibly natural and pleasant tone. It really is an electrostatic-y sound; very clear sounding, but not overly analytical. Mostly neutral, but that sparkle and speed in the treble really brings something special to these IMO. These remain my favorite closed back headphones (over the Triple Driver 1More, over the Beyer T5P, over the Meze 99) and I use these more than my HD800s(the GL2s sound more natural for indie rock and indie folk to me and have a fairly wide soundstage for closed backs).
Try the $80 Cyberdrive version if you're not sure about these. They should probably have a similar sound, but might have different tuning. Bed Bath and Beyond has a great return policy, if you end up not liking them. Also make sure to pad roll/burn them in.

RorsetI have so many headphones that at this point I want something that really stands out. I will try the ones at bed bath and beyond. Thank you for the fine explanation. P.s I love vocals and crystal clear highs.

TonyRizoThe HD600 were my go to headphones for 10+ years. After receiving the GL2, more than a year ago, the HD600 rarely get played. They are still good headphones. Just prefer the M&J GL2 more. The two plusses of the HD600 are comfort and soundstage size. The GL2 have a smaller stage (most likely due to the closed back), but have greater focus and resolution. The GL2 also sound more extended from bottom to top. The high frequencies are an amazing match of detail and smoothness. Only electrets/electrostats seem to have such an effortless quality. Detail without etch, spit or grit. Remember the top Sennheiser headphones are electrostats.

BarondlaInteresting, great to hear this. Have you heard the cyberdrive pair? If so, signatures the same of the gl2?

TonyRizo@TonyRizo I've heard one set of CD. They were totally different headphones with built in amps. The tuning was not the same. They were lighter weight in the bass and brighter. Probably too bright for me if it had been any other driver type. Electret/electrostatic drivers have so few problems in the high frequencies they often allow a little brighter signature. Which is good because stats tend to struggle a little with bass quanity.

TonyRizoI prefer the GL2. They are a little warmer than neutral. But not basshead levels of bass. They have a little golden glow. The Mitchell & Johnson MJ2 have a little less bass than the GL2. The CD are even lighter weight.
To be fair, the CD had built in battery powered amps. Most likely class D. That isn't the same tech as the daps, amps, and components I use the M&J with. They even had built in eq presets. The M&J were more involving for me.

ajheylOh boy, many audio gears. My Sony Walkman ZX2 paired with my Fiio E12 Mont Blanc portable amp A Fiio X7 MK2 Paired with my Cayin C5 Portable amp. The Little Dot Mk2 with super tubes as power and the Mullard M8161/Cv4015 as tube drivers. and my Emotiva A100 paired with the Schiit Loki EQ. As for headphones way to much to list but yes the hd600, several grados, fostex mk3, the monolith m560, the monolith M1060c, the Monolith M565 with the shure1540 pad which til now have been my end game sort of speak because the sound is phenomenal paired with the Emotiva A100 amp. plus many other good headphones. It is why i want them to be different but even better sounding than the M565s hmmm hard to be at 66mm drivers and the shure pads. Anyway you get my gist.

Oct 29, 2018
Kuma006No, HD700 are orders of magnitude better, as far as sound quality. The sound signature of the HD 700 is very polarizing, and why some people hate them, but just overall quality of the transducers, HD 700 is far, far better than the GL2. Also, the HD 700 are supremely comfortable while the GL2 hurts after a short time wearing them due to the small size of the ear cups and the shallow ear pads. Soundstage and imaging on the HD 700 are far better than the GL2.

Kuma006I'd say that depends on your personal expectations at this price point. :) . I paid ... I think it was on the order of $80 -- for the Tate & Bauer rebadge of these, and because they are unique with the electret + dynamic setup, I don't regret it at all even at $80. I thought the sound was different than my other headphones, which made it worth the purchase for me, so I was kind of bummed about the comfort on my ears being an issue. You can swap out the pads for the alcantara Shure SRH1540 pads, and they become a lot more comfortable, but it kind of messes with the sound a bit. Disclaimer: I did give my pair away to a roommate who had no good over-ear headphones, and he liked them a great deal, so I suppose one could argue I didn't find them spectacular enough to keep them, but I have always thought about getting a replacement and finding better pads that don't change the sound as much as the SRH1540 pads did. At this price I'd probably myself buy them if I didn't have some other audio purchases that are higher priority for me right now.

Kuma006These are not a real electrostatic headphone, they have an electret + dynamic. I'm not knowledgeable enough to know technically how far apart those are but I know true electrostatics require special energizers and from what I read, it matters as far as getting the sound signature of an electrostatic vs just what you get in the electret. If you're really wanting to hear an electrostatic, the Koss ESP/95X are dropping now on Massdrop (3 days left as of today) for $499, and while they are entry-level stats, there are many people who like them: https://www.massdrop.com/buy/massdrop-x-koss-esp-95x-electrostatic-system . I have the HD 700 and K712 Pro also, I think both are excellent. Do you not like your HD 700?

Kuma006Well, it was a very qualified recommend if it was even a recommend at all. :D But to my ears, it's not anywhere close to the level of sound quality as either the K712 Pro or the HD 700, just be aware. Interesting / different, and closed, yes.

mechcentricThey have a common fit. You can put Brainwavz on them so the M50x Dekoni ones should be fine, Yaxi stPad2 are a good option as well as someone pointed out on a forum. I wouldn't recommend full velour since it will mess with the sound too much, but angled leather is a good option if you aim for a bigger soundstage.

mechcentricYes those on the link are dekonies but the ones on my m565 are the shure1540 velour pads and I can attest to the sound. Great bass and great punch while maintaining the mids and treble. While there are many pads that will fit the m565 I can tell you from trying others that the sound always changes some and not always to the better which is why I'm keeping the shure1540 in place for my m565. The size of the hole, the fabric, the thickness, all play into the sound.

mechcentricWell, no permanent fix yet, I simply put them in the same spot and it holds with the existing velcro but it can easily be pulled away. I will figure something out in the near future. I have to many headphones and find myself dividing my time in between them.... lol

TonyRizoMaybe m565 doesn't profit of the seal like the M&J headphones do. In my experience the JP1 really doesn't like velour pads. Their subbass drops into oblivion and the mids become unnatural (thin and metallic) with them on, a shame since the midrange is their best asset. GL2 are closed back as well so I'd think they would react the same way.

TonyRizoI'm thinking of getting some adhesive loop velcro custom cut for the SRH1540 pads. I was thinking of going off the dimensions of the brainwavs oval velour pads, but I would appreciate dimensions if you have them. Lmk if you want a pair and we can split the quote.
