RykkerThe keys are made of ABS plastic, so they will shine as they wear. I'm no expert, but how soon they wear depends on how frequently-used they get. If you plan on daily driving this particular set, expect some shine within 6 months or so and complete shine about a year in. Ymmv depending on your use. Obviously if you game, your left side will be more worn than the right. If you don't know what shine is, it's basically when the set loses its "rough" texture and becomes super smooth and "shiny" like SA. If you don't mind or care about said shine, then one set should suffice.
EDIT: Here's a pic of what shine looks like. Mind you this is an extreme scenario and also the caps of this set are double shot, unlike the one shown, so the alphas will never fade.
PineconeA very important thing to consider is that the eventual shine that some users report on Sinature Plastics ABS DSA keycaps is nowhere near this level of wear you displayed in the picture.
The caps you linked have extremely bad quality unlike anything I've ever seen from Signature Plastics'. I have been using a DSA set daily, since 2014, and it's yet to present any signs of wear. Like, at all.
But some users definitely report a bit of shine, so it's something that could potentially happen depending on how you use the keyset and its mileage - natural skin oils and grease play a huge factor here and eating while using the keyboard also decreases the texture of the caps as time goes by. I'd say that ABS sets can last for a very long time and will maintain its textures and shape preserved for yeas if you take good care of it - by using it like a normal person would.
Just don't Doritos on your keyboards and you will be fine!
MiToI'm aware, thats why I said that the picture is an extreme example and not entirely accurate. I'm currently using SCIFI from your first run for over 6 months and no issues :)
PineconeOh that's great to hear! Thank you so much for the support man, I hope you're enjoying the set! What do you think about the Karambit addition in this round?
PineconeYou know, I kind of like the shine. I think it makes the keycaps show character that you've used them enough to do that. I still can't decide whether I like thick PBT or doubleshot abs better, lol. On OEM I like pbt mostly, but I've never tried other profiles besides cherry and oem, so I can't wait for my juke box and this to come. Wonder what I'll end up liking the best?
KangTheMadYeah, the shine is very subjective. Some hate it, some appreciate it it. Different strokes for different folks, you know? Most will argue thick PBT > ABS but they're both very different in feel and quality. There are more options and variety available in ABS than there are PBT. The only way to find out what you like best is try them all!
blackcatdownMy girlfriend actually gifted that for me. I believe she used DecalGirl using an asiimov-themed wallpaper online and photoshopped the details to fit the cutouts for the skin. High quality stuff and very re-peelable if you didn't align it correctly many times. Just make sure you don't apply super strong pressure unless you're absolutely certain you're not gonna peel it off anymore hahaha.
I am currently rigging my entire setup (walls, desk, pc, peripherals etc.) with the asiimov theme any tips on finding asiimov themed things would be great!
