Anyone trying to play up, or out right claim, that a Montblanc is a “Status Symbol” is either trying to sell you one, or trying to justify having purchased one themselves.
Pretty embarrassing either way ;- )

RayFThe most important documents were signed using a Montblanc pen. Yes, if you do not value the status a fine pen brings to a meeting then you probably also don't care about the shoes you wear and you drive a Yugo.
The pen is an amazing piece of workmanship. It is balanced. Easy to write with and, if you see someone using this pen, you know they are a person that appreciates the finer things in life.
Your comments imply you have no idea what value, image and class implies and demands. This pen sets you apart from the pack.
Yes, I own several including the MB Diplomat fountain pen.

RayFOh, they most definitely are. If you want to say something like power or dress-to-success accessory...yeah, fine. That's quibbling, tho, mostly. Right or wrong, MB is recognizable, and known to be a luxury item. That in itself is status, whether you think it deserves it or not.
And, no, I neither have the BP, nor care to purchase one. Nor any other refill holder. That's all this is; a vessel for holding a refill. You're not paying for a well-executed nib, a smooth piston filler, or anything. I've got top-drawer fountain pens; I've laid out for those. Still might if something really eye-catching is released, but I have more than I can use.
I do have a 144 FP, but I don't give it any form of pride of place or status. I have better choices for that. Also got a 222...much older student pen. That's the one I'd keep. It's a nice writer.

Dr.RayOh, Dr. Ray—you are a Kool-Aid drink‘n son of a gun if I ever heard one!
You sound like just like the pompus-ass Montblac’s marketing department had in mind when they jacked the price of this pen (the last two times). But more to the point, it’s a damn ball point. Read Craig Lewis’s comments below for more on that. By the way, I own this POS pen, and about two hundred others—which I like more ;- )

CraigLewisMoved on from all that dress for success nonsense long ago.
I tend to go along with the theory that those who covet Montblanc anything are compensating for their short comings elsewhere (like Dr Ray, above). Share your sentiments regarding ballpoints—real pens, as you know, suck ink from a bottle.

RayFSince when do ballpoint pens such ink from a bottle? Yes, we are compensating for wealth and breeding. And, yes, I own several hundred pens..anywhere from Cross through Montblanc. I do love the glide of a Bic Criystal 1.6 mm. But, no accounting for taste. Are you sucking your thumb?

Dr.RayI suspect that when it comes to sucking anything, you are by far the most experienced on this site!
I don’t think there’s any disagrement on that point...

RayFIt is a status symbol in the law community in th uk. I was a little envious. So when I moved career to oil and gas, I bought one on the plane on the way home, as if to say “there I have one too”. To be honest it looks great, but a little scratchy to write with; I prefer my £2 gel pen from Clinton cards, and half of that £2 goes to charity. My montblanc lives in my suit pocket as a status symbol when attending meetings etc.

WarmCatI think most are purchased for the same reason. Their not horrid pens, just a tad over priced. You can probably find a smoother refill for yours—or better yet, move up to a nice fountain pen?

RayFI don't think anyone who can read misunderstood, but to make it clear to you...
I am NOT dissing MB, or denying they're a status symbol. My point is ANY $100+ ball point is foolish, IMO.

CraigLewisNo you're not--I'M DISSING MB (but mostly those who purchase them), and I'm agreeing with you that any $100+ ball point is foolish. Actually, anything over $30 may indicate a serious underlying medical condition, that should be discussed with a healthcare professional. Right?

No. You are not right in the slightest. Time to ask Massdrop for an Ignore feature.

RayFI agree that any ballpoint more expensive than a fisher ag-7 space pen (about $40) is ludicrous. But a MB is going to be noticed in a high end professional setting. The fountain pen much more so, but there is no denying that MB has marketed themselves well in that regard. Is it worth even 15% of what they ask? No. But they are selling a brand, not a pen. Same goes for Apple, Dyson, Mercedes, etc.
Personally I'll likely only ever own a 149. I'd prefer something a little more dramatic in a professional setting, like my homo sapiens or my custom twsbi vac700r with a 14k wet noodle flex nib, or a vintage eversharp skyline manifold for a carbon copy.
If I really do need a non-FP, I'll stick with the fisher space pen. It's got pedigree, looks, performance, is still made in the USA on the same equipment that made it for the astronauts, writes on ANYTHING, and comes in at $40

HoneybadgersYou know, I would agree with you on the "I want to impress my budds in a business setting" but that's an awfully low bar, and a long time before MBs became a cliche. You don't think Bill Gates or Warren Buffett worries much about impressing people with the pen they carry, do?
Personally, I pity the poor fool who thinks a pen makes them appear to be anything other than they already are (or are not):

You've had the opportunity to ignore this or any other conversation all along--you don't need a button, just a little will power. If you don't agree with my points, make your own. But if you're suggesting "this pen sets you apart from the pack" as Dr.Ray was jabbering on about, then I suspect you've been drinking/sharing the same pitcher of Kool-Aid. Remember: "Manners maketh the man" not the pen in his pocket (or the marketing nonsense he falls for).
