This is a sheep amongst wolves. 21 jewel movement, wr 30m . Times can make a better watch. $1500 for this junk? Come on! Really?

anthonyosborn70Can you elaborate? I'm new to the watch game. I'm considering moving some money around to buy this. Is the quality of the movement not commensurate with the price?

ClerkpalmerHe is complaining about the lack of water resistanc. If you like it, just don’t get it wet (other than rain).

ClerkpalmerIt is actually a 25 jewel movement not advertised 21.( 25 better) the water resistance is quite poor at 30 m. Nice watch but durability is bound to be poor due to the lack of water resistance(WR). Think of WR as a toughness scale. 30m not to tough. 3000m bulletproof. I personally would not buy a watch with less than 100m WR. THATS JUST ME.

amjo70WR is in no way a measure of toughness. First, this is a dress piece. I may have issue with the size of this watch as a dress piece, but 30m is more then adequate for that role. Second, toughness Is measured by a wide variety of tests including shock resistance, magnetic resistance, and WR. the shock and magnetic resistance on a non shielded watch are determined by the movement, so most basic divers will have the same as this watch in that respect. Watches are tools, and not every tool in the chest needs to be a hammer.

YankeeRiderYes. And yes. But simplified toughness (many different ways to describe and measure.) if you dropped a 300 m WR watch and a 30 m WR watch from the same height and onto the same surface you would be safer with the 300m example. But I know where you are coming from.

These are not both hammers. Lol

ClerkpalmerSo when looking at watches 5 main factors define the price: The movement, the case material, dial, the fit/finish/polishing, and the brand/exclusivity.
This movement can be found in $600 Swatch group watches, Swatch makes the ETA movements. When compared to a $600 (street price not MSRP) Hamilton Intramatic this watch doesn't excel in any of the above factors in a way to warrant this price difference.

KethInteresting for sure. I feel like this is still a bit overpriced. At least compared to what 1500 will get me in the wus forums. Not apples to apples but I think its relevant.

ClerkpalmerYou're absolutely correct, this watch is over priced for what you can get from other grey market retailers (no factory warranty).

pray, tell me, what would you rate one of those oil-filled divers?

SirHelixIt was on $408 shipped from Japan. Really a shame that 38mm watches are just too small for my wrist. Would have preferred the SPB075J1, but just not in my price range.

SirHelixYeah, 40mm without the crown is as small as I enjoy. I have a 45mm Alpina, and a 46mm Oris Aquis small seconds...the Aquis wears big.

KethI just saw in some post on your profile that you’ve got an 8 inch wrist. Now that makes a lot of sense.
...have you ever tried on one of Invicta’s 50mm++ dive watches [abominations]? You seem like their target market. ;)

SirHelixIf I could sell my Alpina and Oris for $800 or more each, and that Seiko for $800, I might take the plunge. The Alpina is no longer available, and the Aquis is always in demand...but they're bigger than what most people want.

amjo70On a 3 hander, 25 jewels is no better than 21. In terms of parts exposed to friction, 21 largely covers all that's needed and 4 additional are more decorative than functional.

anthonyosborn70This and that have nothing to do with it. WR and toughness are totally different things. Drop your Invicta and an Oris diver 65 from the same height in example, and nothing says the Invicta will resist the drop better, despite the Oris being 10 ATM only. Same if you test a 20 ATM Damasko and any 100 ATM rated watch in stainless steel, chances are the Damasko will better resist the drop. WR is only about gaskets and screw-down crowns to make it resistent to leaks. Watch makers don't put thick WR gaskets in dress watches as they need to keep the case slim. And the absence of screw down is to make it more practical on a watch that's not designed to go in the swimming pool. So WR makes a watch tougher only in the sense it will sustain more humidity and water. The rest of toughness comes from overall engineering.

Slprwrx13That watch has what is truly a cult like following, it's been built up way too much. I imported the limited SARY089 hoping that following would make it a solid investment, so far so good. Sadly the listings for them don't differentiate between the Japanese made limited run of 1000 vs the 3500 international run that wasn't assembled in Japan.

KethIt certainly does have a cult like following.  And while I love the styling, it just doesn't perform as well as I'd like.  The deployment strap is not built very well either, if you bump something, even slightly, it comes undone... But for looks, I do enjoy it.  It wears well with a suit.
