I'm no expert on fountain pens, but I am learning gradually. I do understand that with a good quality nib, as with what Montevede makes, there really shouldn't need to have a "break in" period and increased writing pressure to increase ink flow down through the tines and on to the paper. If that were the case, this pen would be very uncomfortable, and unpleasant to use. One should not have to alter one's writing style to aquire a desired result. If so this pen is not right for you. I ordered this pen, look forward to testing it out. I have purchased a total of five foutain pens thus far all medium Nibs. I have had very good luck with all except one, which required quite a bit of "tuning" A well tuned, high quality fountain pen should not require any additional "tuning" by the buyer of which could void any warranty issues (keep this in mind) However, as mentioned, I purchased a custom hand made pen, researched several websites related to tuning and polishing of nibs etc., Ink flow, and "scratchyness should not be issues related to a new fountain pen especially one of this quality, however it does happen sometimes very rarely (I'm told) My main point being these high end pens should write perfectly straight out of the box, if not, don't waist a lot of time trying to experiment with different ink, bending tines, etc., contact the manufacturer it's probably a defective nib. Now after saying all that, it's good to educate yourself, this is a labor of love, learn as much as you can (or want) about your fountain pens, it will only increase your pleasure of writing. That's my two cents.

Chipp1Very true. I have heard that Monteverde nibs tend to have terrible quality control, and you can always replace the nib (I think it's a standard #6). I might want one if I were buying this pen just in case, but otherwise an awesome pen at an awesome price.

Chipp1Well said, I’m in that same boat. Which five do you have and which is your favorite to date?
