Would this make a good general purpose kitchen knife? I ask because the handle appears kind of bulky?

I_love_stuffThis knife is a good camping knife for chopping, carving wood and general utility. It is not optimal for kitchen use (though it could work ok). First, it has a single bevel grind. This is good for maintaining an edge in the field. But it does not slice as cleanly as a good kitchen knife would. Second, this is a carbon steel blade. Carbon steel can be good in the kitchen and can be easily sharpened, but it will react with acidic foods and can add a metallic taste. The blade will require more upkeep than a stainless steel blade would. If you want inexpensive kitchen knives that are good quality, look into Forschner (aka Victorinox). One 8-inch chef knife and one 4-inch utility or paring knife would do 90% of everyday kitchen tasks.
BTW, the handle on this knife is great. It is not really bulky, but fills the average person's hand. The blade is only about 4 inches long. That's why the handle appears big.

Hwy181Thanks for the information. I have a victorinox knife and overall it does the job but requires a lot of sharpening to maintain its edge. On the subject of sharpening, can you recommend a good sharpening tool or system that isn't extravagantly expensive? Thanks again.

I_love_stuffIf you end up getting this knife it can easily be sharpened using any flat, abrasive surface, such as sandpaper glued to a wooden board. Simply work the entire bevel (no need to worry about sharpening angles). See https://www.ragweedforge.com/scanshrp.html for more details.
