Morakniv Companion Review:
Overall: Great Value, not an everyday carry for me.
Background: I backpacked over 700 miles of the Appalachian Trail. Tried several knives while on the trail. Professionally trained steamfitter. Also do building, grounds, fleet, and production equipment maintenance.
The Details:
The Morakniv creates a great value due to its low price point while delivering a comfortable handle, favorable carbon steel, and durable safe sheath.
The use of the knife certainly dictates its design. For me, the nonfolding 7+" long design did not fit the daily carry job. I use a 3" long (folded) knife that swims in my front pocket. I can quickly open boxes, and do other simple daily tasks. If I needed to cut an apple it takes a bit longer due to the 1.8" usable blade on my folding knife, but it can be done and I don't cut apples daily.
The benefit of Morakniv's carbon steel is a better sharpening process as a knife owner at the cost of rusting easier. The straight non-folding blade gives you benefit in leveraging strength without having a safety concern or weakness in design. The very grippy and durable handle ensure a better experience if the need to use it in wet conditions arose.
For me this knife would be a fantastic survival knife to carry on daily forest walks or hikes. I would also reconsider its benefits if I were to go on an extended backpacking trip due to its lightweight design. The size and feel of the knife conveys a powerful reliable knife (like a KABAR) though Morakniv pulls this off with a smaller and lighter design that is still plenty big enough.
I was hoping I could change my knife and get accustomed to a larger knife on a daily basis but I couldn't. I felt that my hand had less control over this larger knife and that the blade was simply too long. If I crunched up my hand and held the knife more like a pen so I could get a closer grip with more control over the tip of this knife then my finger would still be an inch away and I would be much more apt to cut myself.
I am also a bigger bellied man and was not able to find a comfortable method of wearing the knife on my waist. The sheath was too large to have comfortably inside of my pocket. I honestly tried day in and day out for some time to try and fit this amazing knife into my daily life.
Would I recommend the knife:
I just clicked on Request button so that I could buy one of these for a close friend who carries a knife daily on a belt hung sheath. He prefers larger knives and I am certain he will love this knife.
