Can anyone comment about the warmth of this jacket? I've heard it's very light and packable but at the expense of warmth. Is this something I would have to layer with quite a bit in single digit and teen temperatures?

WearebobFor hiking I can get away with just this and a nice mid weight base layer down to 20 degrees or so. Below that another layer needed for me. Often just a lightweight shell. YMMV. Great jacket and usable for lots of activities. I take it everywhere from nights on desert safari to mountain trekking.

WearebobProbably yes - it starts to feel thin in the lower 30 degree range. However, if you're moving, it gets really warm quick. I layer it with a Gortex shell & it gets hot for me in the 30s. This is without any thermal base layer.

WearebobI typically backpack in PNW / Cascades. I use my GW almost exclusively for backpacking as my night / stop jacket. When the temps get into the 30's I need layers for sure. I typically layer an icebreaker t-shirt + woolpro scout (thin wool long sleeve) + ghost w + rain shell if windy. If temps are expected to get close to 30 I use a lightweight fleece instead of the woolpro.

WearebobI've done a lot of fall/winter wear in mine (sans hood, size small), and I've got a *lot* of opinions about it:
(fyi, my warmth baseline seems to be about average, as judging by EN sleeping bags and other temp ratings)
On the Wonderland trail around Mt Rainier in the late fall, this jacket was superb: it provided enough core warmth to keep me comfy, though when the humidity or rain picked up, it tended to wet out a bit underneath a rain layer. I was out in temps around 40°, and I was comfortable in this with a mid-weight Smartwool top underneath while moving around camp.
During two camping trips in Joshua Tree, I found this jacket's lower limit: when standing or sitting in weather below 40°, this jacket is uncomfortably cold. My partner's MontBell Plasma 1000 was night-and-day warm compared to this.
Sizing: my small fits me pretty snugly, so I haven't been able to layer up underneath it in colder temperatures (without compressing the down.) This likely hasn't done me any favors.
Hood: definitely get it with a hood.

WearebobI would agree with what you've heard. In my opinion this makes a acceptable fall/spring jacket or packable layer, but I would not wear this jacket in winter conditions. I could say the temperature floor is somewhere between 30 and 40 degrees, depending on the individual. Certainly NOT designed for single digits or teen temperatures.
For the price, I was unimpressed.
