I recently subscribed to Massdrop so I am not yet used to it. This Movado is an impressive timepiece that I would very like to add to my collection but it seems to me that it is not much of a deal?
How much of a deal you get on certain products really depends on the product, and the particular drop youre looking at.
Sometimes the drops cost just as much as buying a product from a 3rd party website. These really suck because it's just a waste of a drop. Other times you do get honest-to-goodness deep discounts that make you happy you subscribed.
Most of the time, though, I've found that you get a decent discount that might nudge you to buy something you otherwise might not have bought. However usually it's not a big enough
savings that you feel compelled to jump on the drop right away.
Even so, great drops occasionally happen. I've jumped on two "holy crap I gotta get that!" deals that interested me in the past 2 months. Thats why I compulsively check my email every day for the latest drops. It gets addicting to see if that days drops will include a gem in the rough.
Stick around long enough and you'll find some killer deals as well as plenty of drops that make you wonder why anyone would bother at that price point. This particular drop, if it gets down to 499, is still about 50 bucks cheaper than the cheapest I've seen elsewhere. Not a hefty discount, but it might be enough to encourage some people to buy who otherwise might not have.
This watch surprised me here. If it gets down to the $499 price, and you like the Museum Dot aesthetic, its a nice watch, and a good price. An ETA movement and a sapphire crystal, is a robust feature set and clean aesthetic for $500.
I’m surprised just because Movado has for the last 30 years has been focused on mediocre (at best) quartz watches, typically of sub standard Asian manufacture. Then they realease this, with all these lovely little details..... like I said, “surprised“
It even says "Swiss made" on it and I think they mean it this time. It's not like they would keep doing what they have been doing forever. I mean it's not right. They had to grow up at some point. I think they are a changed company now, really. I might go back to them but my Seiko's are treating me so good. Screw it, I'll just have another smoke and put on Carson. What year is it?
I joined the Orient bambino drop which is still on I think and it will be my first order here. The Seiko alpinist (SARB 017) is the watch that made me subscribed here and I'm waiting for it patiently. I am going to order it as soon as I see it here regardless of the price since I want it very badly but I hope waiting it here comes with a great discount.
The Movado here is a good exemple of a watch 'I would not have bought otherwise' as you mentioned. This watch was not on my radar and since I've seen it here, I would like to own it. I'm not decided yet if I want to order it but I was surprised to find it on third seller party at almost same price as here.
I am 100% with you on the nice description. I was more asking about the price. Since I am new, I would have thought that massdrop would come with BIG discount. For what I gathered online for this specific watch, it is more or less the same price of third seller party.
Have you checked out the Movado Datron Automatic? Fabulous and beautiful watch, accurate, and robust. I used to have one and did everything with it for 5 years straight, it held up beautifully and was still looking great.
Doc, truthfully, I’ve not checked out any Movado products in at least 20 years with any serious consideration. The last time I even eyeballed one was maybe 4 years ago, when my wife was looking at a bunch of fashion brands (Kors, Burberry, Gucci). That’s the company Movado kept in my summation friend. Looks as if they are making a concerted effort of making a more serious piece however, which is nice to see. I still own a Museum Time piece from the 70’s (pre Horwitt settlement I think), which is a cherished piece, as gift from mom and dad.
Its great to see you had such a sharp piece give you so much happiness for as long as it did. I wasn’t even aware Movado made a piece as detailed as yours man. Does it still occupy a place of yours?
No. I don’t have it anymore. Unfortunately I’m not the collector type but rather the minimalist type and get rid of almost all material belongings within a few years at most, and replace them with different ones. I sold that specific Movado I think back in 2015. However I occasionally miss it. It was a very nice watch.
