Amonkey71Cryptocurrency mining is the problem with the high price of most of these video cards. My MSI GTX 1080 Ti Gaming X 11GB card cost my $770 back in November - a normal price for this high end card. Now the same card sells for $900 on NewEgg (backordered), where I originally bought it. Last month it was selling for $1500 there - almost twice what I paid!!
Prices now seem to be dropping closer to normal. I will wait until prices drop closer before I buy again, but those wanting or needing to build a new computer might find the cost close enough to bear, as they've been waiting for a while now.

Amonkey71Massdrop does offers better prices, just not the old price you are looking for. Crypto mining is the problem with the price of these video cards. Even on NewEgg this MSI GTX 1080 Gaming X card is offered for $928. The straight MSI GTX 1080 Gaming (no X) is selling there for $700. Big price difference there for small changes between these two cards. Over on Amazon, the Gaming X is going for $761 from an Amazon vendor. Even Amazon doesn't offer a better price than Massdrop.
But I do agree with your original post. I would wait for the prices to drop back closer to normal before I buy again, as they are starting to do that. But then I don't need a high end card now. Some do.

ITzNiODamn right, it's pretty pathetic seeing all these people join the drop at $699. I'll downgrade from a GTX 980 to a 1030 if I have to, and I'm running 3440x1440 as well.

MelodicApex8Have no idea what you are talking about. I said Amazon had the MSI GTX 1080 Gaming X for $761 (US) and your retort is that "no they don't". "I just got the email and amazon has it for 760$ and on Prime!"
What the heck! Prime, one either has paid for or has not paid for - has nothing to do with the product. And you probably get email deals, if you can call one dollar a deal, because you paid for Prime. Not everyone pays $99 for Prime each year. And this is your argument to quibble because I stated a fact, that the price is $761 from a vendor there? See here: https://www.amazon.com/MSI-GTX-1080-GAMING-8G/dp/B01GLYD7MG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1521842023&sr=8-1&keywords=msi+gtx+1080+gaming+x+8g
Now, if you are talking about the Massdrop price, well that just doesn't make sense at all, since it is lower at $699.

BmxantI wouldn't do it, personally. I wouldn't go below a GTX 1060. Not sure a 1030 can handle 1440p and still give you good frame rates in games. If that doesn't matter to you, then a 1030 is just fine. For that matter, your GTX 980 would be fine.
From what I've read, the GTX 1070 and above are best for 1440p. A GTX 1060 or 1050 Ti might handle that resolution okay by using lower game settings. But the GTX 1050 Ti and 1060 are considered very good 1080p video cards.
Besides, dropping down to a 1030 is making a concession, just as those who choose to buy the GTX 1080 offered here. They concede to the price and you concede to the performance. Of course, everyone chooses what they wish to do. Neither is right or wrong.

MustangEh, no worries. My comment didn’t finish. My main point is Massdrop has not had better prices and only good for seeing what others are interested in. I’ve seen this card for 639 on Amazon too

MelodicApex8Well, the price on these cards has varied a lot in recent months due to crypto miners. Eventually they will return closer to their original prices. Some will wait for that and others won't. Just that simple.
I'm sure that card has been on Amazon for the $639 you're talking about, and that could have been as recent as November or December when the prices were almost back to normal. But then crypto miners started another buying frenzy of these graphic cards, causing a shortage and pushing prices way up again. I bought my MSI GTX 1080 Ti Gaming X in November for $770. Now that card is selling for about $1300 to $1400, and was as high as $1550 just a couple weeks ago!
So, the price will vary, but Massdrop is usually cheaper than most everywhere else. Sometimes not by much but still cheaper.
