Does the phone plate obstruct wireless charging for devices like an iPhone X? >Also does anyone know if the mount itself can be used anywhere else besides between the airplane seat trays?

NEONmarshmallowDesigned to be used for airplanes with table installed in front of you. the metal plate should be placed at the bottom of the phone or in between the phone and protective case. The wireless coil on all phones are in the middle.

I would worry about the effect of strong magnets on the navigation system of the airplane. Somewhere on the plane is a sensitive device that measures the earth's magnetic field to reference magnetic north, and it's carefully compensated for the structure and electronic systems of the plane. Sure, they use inertial nav and GPS and all that, but they still use magnetic north to calibrate/back up that stuff. I have seen magnets inadvertently mess up a heading indicator. Looks like a bad idea to me.

edfixPlanes aren't nearly as feeble as it sounds like you think they are. I've had some extremely powerful industrial strength rare earth magnets shipped to me, with a large portion of their transit in a plane just in a Pelican style case. This little magnet is a non-issue for sure.

I have seen it happen. So, I'm alergic to having powerful magnets aboard any airplane I'm flying. It's always a non-issue until it becomes an issue.

Someone who knows more about electronics will have to edumuhcatify me on this, but "powerful neodynium magnets" + electronic devices = A recipe for potential issues in my book. From my understanding this is theoretically safe for a phone as they don't use a traditional hard drive and RAM shouldn't be impacted by magnets, but I've read tales of people saying it messes with certain features of a phone. Also if you put something that does use a hard drive like an old ipod or similar it'll die, horribly.

NaftoorNaftoor, As a heavy phone user (which is pretty much everybody these days) I have a magnetic holder in my car, and one on my home desktop. There is a permanent plate on the back of my iPhone X which is required to mount magnetically. I've had this configuration for over a year, never had an issue. I also have one on a backup iPhone 6+, the same thing, never had an issue. It's super convenient versus the mounts with the wings to grab the phone. Hope this helps.
