Hey everyone, The inbound shipping time for our order of the stepper motors took slightly longer than we originally anticipated due to Chinese New Year. But now I am Happy to report that all the orders from the drop have been shipped out! Thanks again for the support guys, and please feel free to share your experience of the motors with the rest of the group afterwards. If there’s anything else we can do to make your Massdrop experience better, just email us at support@massdrop.com :)

Hey everyone, We have just been informed that our order of Nema-17 Stepper Motor has been shipped out by our vendor in China. We have already alert our warehouse staff about this shipment, so we should be able to process the bulk shipment upon arrival, and repackage them into individual orders before shipping them out to everyone very quickly. We will keep you guys updated once we receive them in the warehouse. Cheers!

Hey guys, Just a quick update on the schedule of the Nema-17 Stepper Motor drop. Our order of the motor is currently in production, and we are expecting the order to be ready for shipment to our warehouse by Jan. 20. Once that happens, we will be able to estimate the day when we will be able to have the motors shipped out to everyone much more effectively. I'll keep everyone updated as soon as we get any additional news regarding the order. Stay tuned...
Hello Everyone!
We just finished speaking with the vendor supplying this buy. Originally the plan was to purchase units from existing stock but since this is such a large order, we have to commission a new production run.
Since these are being made as part of a separate production run, we have to increase the estimated shipping time by 12 business days to account for production time.
We apologize for the additional wait time and if you need to make changes to your order let us know via support@massdrop.com
Thanks for your support and we'll keep you up to date with the latest information as this buy progresses!

So is the consensus that these would in fact be suitable for a DIY 3D printer?

Hmm, just noticed something even weirder - the URL for this drop is "nema17-motor-planetary-gearbox". Not that there's anything wrong with gearhead steppers, but that would make these motors much less suitable for most RepRap designs. Hopefully just some confusion when the page was set up, but even more reason to want Massdrop to give us some more details (eg. manufacturer and part number).

owens_billThe specs match this motor exactly: http://www.stepperonline.com/3d-printer-nema-17-stepper-motor-59ncm84ozin-2a-17hs192004s-p-18.html
So I think that you're probably right, and there was some confusion when they set up the page.
sackjellyThat is exactly what happened. I made the page, it is my mistake. That said, the pack we are selling DOES NOT HAVE the planetary gearbox.
You guys posted links to this everywhere, and now I can't fix my mistake without rustlin jimmies...

Any chance we can get the manufacturer name / part number? Perhaps a photo of the actual item for sale? I'm new to massdrop so I'm not quite sure the precedence here but I would like to have a bit more information before I jump in and replace my DIY printer/scanner hack with real motors :)

Price is great, but I'm suspicious that we aren't being told the manufacturer. And the pictures used as examples are clearly not the motor in the description - the sideways photo is a motor with a fully round shaft, and the one with the pulley is a different motor with black endcaps. I'm tempted, but not going to buy without knowing more.

These steppers seem adequate for use in home 3D printers and CNC machines. According to the RepRap wiki ( http://reprap.org/wiki/Stepper ), "The Mendel officially requires approximately 13.7 N·cm torque (19.4 ozf·in) of holding torque (or more) for each of the X, Y and Z axis motors to avoid issues."
