Lame! I recall running a check to see if the this lens was compatible with my D40x, and had an understanding that it would be compatible with my camera. But, of course, it's not. Be extremely wary about buying these lenses free-floating. It doesn't work in any respect, whether as an auto-focus lens or in manual focus mode. So what is the point of selling lenses like this that are not even compatible with most of Nikon's DSLR cameras?
I just picked up the VR version as a certified refurb from the factory on Amazon for $219. It sounds like a big price jump, but if you try to photograph without a tripod on a 300mm lens without VR, you will understand why it is worth it over this lens.
Why would you buy this one over the other currently running drop? Not a rhetorical question, I really want to know. The only differences I can tell are that this one is 55-300 and the other 70-300, this one has 4.5-6.3 aperture and the other 4.5-6.3, this one is non VR and the other is VR II, and finally this one has silent "Pulse" focus motor.
You might be better off looking at the Nikon site to compare the differences. They're very well could be differences that may appeal to you. Great deal, and if it complements your other lenses, could be a great addition to your collection.
BeyondMaxPowerAlso put the VR meaning in for people who aren't familiar with it. Just trying to put basic info out because most comments mention VR, but without a definition, newer people to DSLR may have no clue and just exactly how important VR is.
LuisYes, but I believe you might need to make sure you have the latest firmware installed. If you don't, you can download it from Nikon and put it on an SD card, then install it on your camera (you'll need an SD card reader to move it from your computer to your camera).
