giamminIt's interesting to me how people are still going on about shipping price after it has been discussed multiple times below - a pair of $2 bricks and a $5000 rare collectable stamp, what do you think would cost the most to ship from the US to Italy? It's off-putting because of the proportion but you're still paying pretty much the same as you would for a super standard desk mat off of Amazon UK.

If you don't care enough for desk mats (as others obviously do) to justify the purchase that's one thing and perfectly understandable, what you shouldn't do is blame the shipping cost without actually being aware of how things work just to add fuel to the fire.

Vigrithi agree with you but i don't understand why on massdrop similar items have shipping costs that span from 3 to 30$

giamminHere too! In my opinion there is a general problem with shipping from the United States to Europe, a lot of times it happened to me that even a 5 dollar screw has a shipping cost of $60, and to be fair if you compare this standard situation with massdrop's, the latter would seem reasonable. What i'd like to see is the possibility to choose different kind of shipping, as a lot of times for cheaper items the shipping is even overkill (in terms of both price and service). This would also make cheaper drops more competitive, a lot of times when you add shipping and customs you end to pay more than buying locally (speaking in general, I understand that this desk mat is unique).

VigrithSorry but this argument does not hold at all. I ordered on Massdrop this year a full keyboard Vortex Vibe, which weighs much heavier than a mouse pad rolled into a tube, and the shipping costs were 8 usd. This is the same thing that people who list cheap products on eBay and whose transport costs as much as the product itself, just to be right ranked. The process is lamentable, that's all. Knowing I have done more than 20 orders over last two years, I can cite many exemples : - Fostex Headphones.... 15 usd (value 450 usd and weight x times a pad) - Varmilo VA68... 14.75 usd. ... full CNC keyboard - KBParadise V60.... 11 usd - IC K Type keyboard, 9.54 usd... full CNC too - glorious gaming wrist bundle, both in wood, 11 usd....
21usd a mouse pad it is just plain theft

MoebiuSFirstly, your Vibe weighs like 1.5lbs and these weigh 2lbs each. I'll indulge your argument because the other things you've stated are actually fair - all the items you've mentioned are either readily available or crafted by a massive factory Massdrop works with.
I purchased a couple enthusiast prints for both the hobbies I partake in, they cost 6 dollars each and I paid $35 overall - $23 shipping. Inked & Screened wood rests, $45 shipped, $20 for the item - $25 shipping. Marble wrist rests - $23 shipping.
Not every product is manufactured by a huge factory that has good business deals with shipping companies, obviously the prices will differ unless Massdrop eats up the price hike. The aforementioned Inked & Screened for example make their products in house, you're paying for their shipping to MD and then from MD to you, of course it's gonna be expensive. You cannot possibly compare the things you are attempting to.
I'm not saying this absolutely just IS the lowest price MD could possibly squeeze out, I'm just saying the line you're attempting to draw is invalid. You don't possibly have enough variables to make an absolute statement like that, neither do I, the difference is you did and I didn't.

VigrithAll my orders cited are on Massdrop platform of course, I forgot to write that explicitely. After it is just a question of presentation and value split. As I told elsewhere, I am more eager to order an item like that at 30 usd (because it is quite unique) with 6 usd as shipping cost, instead of an item at 30 usd artificially reduced to 15 and 21 usd of shipping. The sum is the same, but in the second case I have the sentiment that my face is ripped off !

MoebiuSIt’s not being artificially reduced. It would be artificially inflated if it were the other way to help cover shipping costs.

MoebiuSI understand that - so are mine, those are all things I bought through MD. I echo the sentiment, I agree that it feels much nicer to pay $6 for a $30 item than the other way around but there's no way to go out and call people out on ripping customers off just because you have a narrow (yet perceived high) understanding of the situation.

VigrithPerhaps narrow, but with no obligation to buy, I just pass, that's all. No debate.

mgsicklerHi mgsickler, do you know what the shipping dimensions will be for the mat? I'll either use a re-shipper, or have it shipped from Massdrop direct depending on the size of the box.
Great design, this will be perfect for a young kid into astronomy. And thanks for not including Pluto- if he saw Pluto he'd demand to know why the other dwarf planets were not there :)
Edit: Scratch that, it's only a $14 difference for international versus US shipping. I'll order it for international shipping.
