1. Each of these weighs like 2lb/1kg (more than some keyboards) and they're huge. Shipping heavy stuff is expensive, no matter what the item is. It's more expensive to ship a bunch of bricks than it is to ship bunch of diamonds.
2. If you get one of Corsair's mm300s for example off of Amazon (DE, ES, UK) they cost 33€ ~ sans shipping - these cost $36 shipped, which with how badly the dollar's doing of late is not even 30€. They're customised, larger and of equivalent quality (I've spoken to people who own both, mine hasn't arrived yet). PCMR ones are also around that price in EU and Razer's desk mats are even more expensive.
3. Novelkeys doesn't have the shipping hookups MD has, these have to be moved around a bunch and it just escalates from there.
So all in all, it's all just mental/placebo - yes, it feels shitty to pay more for shipping than you do for the actual item; however, it's completely justifiable and entirely worth it if you're in the market for something like this.
