I decided to purchase this product because I liked the idea of breaking away from disposable cans of non-breathable gas. A little pricy but otherwise a pretty smart product for a keyboard enthusiast to own, I thought.
So I joined the drop for the X3 model, and it arrived a few days ago. The device has a hefty weight to it that feels good in my hand, and I like the form factor—it is quite intuitive to use and has a cool look as well. It even stands upright on a flat surface just like a can of air.
Ultimately, though, this is the my first purchase from Massdrop that I regret making. From my perspective this product has two major drawbacks that make it a non-viable product. This is just my opinion, but I believe that both drawbacks potentially pose safety risks.
1. TOO LOUD. As far as I can tell, this device is louder than our vacuum cleaner, and is louder even than my wife's hair dryer. Perhaps I have sensitive hearing, but the noise this thing makes actually hurts my ears if I turn it on for more that 5–10 seconds. So I would say that this product is suitable for use only in environments where everyone in the area normally wears hearing protection. Work sites where heavy machinery is operated, etc.
2. No power safety. The Hurricane includes no safety mechanism to keep the power from coming on unintentionally. I'm thinking something like a power switch, a guard around the trigger, or maybe a way to remove the battery. Nothing like that. So if you pack the device into a bag, for example, you have to somehow ensure that nothing accidentally presses the trigger, or this thing could potentially go off in your bag. And since the device is so loud, I imagine that accidental activation could cause great alarm or maybe even panic in some situations.
If the above two items aren't big drawbacks for you, then the benefits of this product will very likely satisfy your needs. But if you're like me, then you may want to think twice before joining a future drop.
