I just got a Denon AVR S910W and all of my Onkyo 636 troubles and issues were instantly solved. What an amazingly well made reciever and DTS:X!
OneLove
what was wrong with it
swatdoggy
Various issues like, hdmi passthrough not working as expected. CEC issues with Tv. Wifi dropping randomly and sids not displaying in wifi setup. Anyways, i am now enjoying sweet audio bliss with my Denon and 0 issues.

Not unless you don't care if you have HDMI inputs that all fail
FYI, this AVR is currently available NEW on Amazon (sold by Amazon too) for $429. So can get it immediately for effectively $5 more when you factor in shipping. Also if it's DOA or has a problem, you'd have Amazon to easily return it.
I'm using one of these in my living room to push 4 polk full range speakers and a sub. Movies + Music + vinyl w/the phono input. No complaints.
I had one of these die on me just the other day. Evidently, Onkyo has an issue with the DTS chip on the HDMI board. I didn't feel like baking (literally) mine to try to get it to work again, so I just bought a denon. Personally, I think it sounds much better. I'll probably never buy onkyo again, not when there's other, better companies out there.
Buyer's beware!
you guys are so salty. I have an onkyo and it is great. This is the onkyo I would get if I were getting another one, just for general purpose connectivity for my tv and players and speakers. I would consider myself as a college audiophile, one without money right now. So for 400, I think this would be a great living room tool for everyday use.
Audiophile? I've owned many different brands of HT receivers over the years. Onkyo isn't a terrible brand but at least we could see an Integra level model, perhaps? What, no THX certification? Or at least one with a full array of PRE OUTS (never mind something truly useful like balanced XLR outs on it)? Is that too much to ask?
This is selling right now for 399 on Amazon -- not sure this suggested pricing of 449 is really worth it.
DoubtfulBuyer
The 399 unit on Amazon is refurbished.
Not bad for a new unit, but for $349.99 you can have an Onkyo Factory Refurbished unit with warranty from Accessories4less. For $50 difference it's not a big deal, but it's available.
this is in the audiophile community? come on now get real people. maybe if it was a hk receiver, but onkyo?
cbtlr
It's more like a M50x fanclub than audiophile community.
cbtlr
I'm waiting for an Anthem AVM 60 to drop on this so-called "Audiophile" community.
It was this time last year on amazon. My onkyo 705 stopped working properly
I got onkyo 626 for less than $300 and it sounds great. I recommend doing a firmware update as soon as you get a onkyo receiver to avoid problems
Tlan
Great deal. Curious where you got that kind of pricing!
Down to $429 on Amazon. Why would anyone wait for this drop?

And if you factor in the $24 Massdrop shipping...it's actually only $5 difference.
jgdpsu
True... I did not account for that.
Good news! After reading your comments, we were able to reach out to our vendor and get a lower price on the receiver. Thanks for letting us know!
is the wifi Dual Band? 2.4Ghz is usually such a problem nowadays as its sooo cluttered its almost useless
This drop should be for the international voltage version - 120/240VAC Many of us in 220/240VAC countries would like to participate

You just said "Retailers do NOT handle warranties AT ALL. All service is forwarded to the manufacturer's authorized service centers, which are completely unrelated to the retailer. And Massdrop works EXACTLY the same way."
Like I said, if I walk in then I can walk right back out with a new product and if I send it back then I can get a new one within a week. That's how authorised retailers handle the warranty. The faulty product will get fixed (if fixable) then be sold as a refurb.
Mate, the amount of information you posted you tried to get across was indeed aggro. I tried to end this conversation 2 posts ago now but it looked like I struct a nerve, so I would appreciate it if you stopped replying and spamming my inbox. Like I said, goodluck with getting them to do international variants.

Who's aggro now? Is this conversation called spamming now? Get real and goodbye!
Yamaha RX-A850 or Yamaha RX-A1050 drop please. :)
I have the TX NR636 4k, HDCP 2.2, Dolby Atmos (no DTS: X yet). It's a decent, fully featured receiver for the price, but frustrating to setup.
My only remaining issue right now is that with "HDMI through" turned on, no signal sources connected and the receiver OFF, my HDTV is still receiving some kind of HDMI signal (receiver is OFF and there are no sources) and won't auto shutdown due to inactivity. I contacted Onkyo support and they told me that this was "Normal". :/
I've done lots of debugging and it's not because of Auto Standby or CEC (which is Off in the TV).
If you simply want to test this out turn "HDMI through" to ON under "HDMI" menu and "HDMI Through" to OFF under "Auto Standby" menu. Both of these sub menus are under "Hardware Setup".
Available on Amazon (and elsewhere) for $440 with free shipping http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-TX-NR646-7-2-Channel-Network-Receiver/dp/B00WM1V9KU

+1. I was excited to see this drop, but it's already cheaper elsewhere.
