Is the Burr Brown DAC a better performer to the others on the market? I’ve been told to look for a unit with one of theirs and I’ve been eyeing Opus stuff for a while but the price wasn’t what I wanted to pay. I like the fact that this also has a balanced output so I can use my balanced cable on my HD 6XX when I’m not sitting at my desk. I’ve also seen reviews on the iBasso DX150 but it was said to be laggy. I like the design and features but I don’t want to get something that has issues. Has this been fixed? Is it worth getting the Opus #3 over the iBasso DX150 or is the DX150 better sounding even with the lag?

Waynerm002They are in the same league for my ears. DX150 has tigher bass but #3 has better tremble with more air in it.

SilentiumThanks for replying. In regards to streaming music and overall UI usage, which would be the better unit? I want a unit I can use and keep long term, with the FIIO M9 now out, would it be in the same league or would the Opus be the better long term purchase or the iBasso DX150.?

Waynerm002I'm not into streaming that much, so take it with a grain of salt please. As far as i understand comfortable streaming demands good software. And Ibasso daps benefit greatly from the support of a person known as Lurker. He solves like every issue their firmware has. Don't get me wrong, I'm quit happy with Opus fw but it is nevertheless a bit simplicistic. There is no playmarket available in it for example. So if your main target is tidal i would go with ibasso. From a soundquality standpoint both Opus and DX150 are superior to M9.

SilentiumI was just watching a video from Zeos on the Pioneer XDP 300, the one thing I liked was how simple and fast it was to navigate. I’ve read a lot on Android based DAPs ad it seems firmware and system updates tend to slow or break functions on the units. Forgive me for the many questions but as an iPhone user, going over to a standalone unit with Android OS and possible issues is worrying. These things aren’t inexpensive and I see some units can get ridiculously expensive, plus bulky to carry around. I do want good sound quality along with portability and battery life, plus something that isn’t buggy. I was set on getting an Opus after reading about them, it the more I read and the more I find out, I’m questioning if it is a good choice. Some of the features on their website caught my eye and it seems like the company will be standing behind their products. So adding the Pioneer as another choice, will the Opus be the preferred one again? If so, I’ll make the decision and join the drop.
Waynerm002Opus DAPs are highly regarded for their sound quality, and the Android interface means at least you are getting a standard level of user interface (and Spotify/TIDAL look the same on Android as iOS). I am also an iOS user (former Genius Bar employee!), and my FiiO X7 was my first experiment/foray into Android. The X7 is rightly criticized for being a bit slow to use... you can totally scroll and play music from it’s built-in music player or stream from downloaded apps like TIDAL and Spotify (I have both, share Spotify with my wife so she can use it to teach dance classes), so it’s functional, but not always smooth or seamless as it is on iOS. I have some issues downloading music from Spotify or TIDAL for offline listening, seems like I have space left but the download just hangs (but I have downloaded two playlists before). Booting up the player from sleep or off does take like 45 seconds, and the battery does last only like 8-9 hours. But, put it on all shuffle, an album, or a playlist, and it sounds GREAT! Really makes me sad that Apple never developed new iPods with MicroSD slots and up to date DAC/Amp technology, but the Apple Music focus of their music app kind of made accessing purchased music or synced music that you loaded onto iTunes on a computer harder to access, more cluttered. The FiiO X7 mk ll apparently addresses the lag with a faster, newer processor (and I love the idea of upgradable amp modules, the AM2A amp module is very satisfying/addicting with my HD 650), but it still has a shorter battery life and might still have some issues with downloading music from streaming apps (just guessing, maybe more processing power helps everything?). I think you have to ask yourself what you want from a player. Again, Opus makes highly regarded players, and at this cost level you will probably be happy with anything you buy unless you see reviews with flaws you just can’t live with.

EvshrugThanks for the reply. While this player doesn’t have a long play time, based on what i’ve read, it is a good sounding player and I am willing to take a shot as I have been eyeing it for some time. Just hope no issues are encountered with it. I haven’t seen anything on the warranty for this unit. Anyone have any info on this?

Waynerm002Massdrop’s policy says that manufacturer’s warranty is offered on drops that say “warranty” in the drop description. For items sold without warranty, Massdrop offers a 30-day return period. I presume that would be in the “specifications” section, and I don’t see it for this drop. There MAY still be a manufacturer’s warranty, but no guarantee of that. That said, in my experience most electronics with a defect (which is all a warranty would cover anyway) show the defect almost immediately with use, so 30 days should be fine. If something happened for the first time from now, most manufacturers claim that it was wear and tear rather than a defect.
