PSUAthI found someone expaining this as I was interested too: (How to read the calendar)
1. You press the button on the side (positioned at 2 o'clock) 2. Hands get rearranged 3. The little (hour) hand is pointing to the bottom part showing the day 4. The big (minute) hand is pointing somewhere around the dial, showing the month (5 o'clock=May) 5. The window is showing the first two digits of the year 6. The thin (second) hand is pointing somewhere around the dial, showing the last two digits of the year in a 12 or 24 format (4 o'clock=**16 or **04 - I guess you have to know which one)
The only thing bugging me is the 19 in the window of this watch. Maybe it shows the date in the month until put in the "complex date mode" and then it shows the first two digits of the year... that or it is a really old photo. Anyway hope this helped! source: http://forums.watchuseek.com/f2/orient-multi-year-calendar-huh-1085883.html

simiken1234the hands indicate the date? interesting. i thought it was just a quick reference, like if it was set to May, and the date window was on 17, the bottom grid shows what day the 17th would be. the leap years confuse me.

simiken1234@PSUAthCheck out @mwbq's post. He explained it beautifully. Also, you can read our explanation in the first paragraph of our Description page!
Basically, the top set of numbers correspond to Year. The bottom set of numbers correspond to the Date. You would first match a Year to a Month. Let's use the pictures on our Description page as an example. We're interested in finding out the Days and Dates in December 2017, so we set the 17 under Dec. Now we can see that Mondays will be on the 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th in December 2017.

PSUAthI'm not sure exactly which image you're looking at (there seem to be at least two different configurations among the various pictures). To handle leap years you'll notice that there are two 'slots' for Jan and Feb, with a highlighted one for each. Leap years (like '16) are on the dial in red. When you have a red year and want January or February calendar, you need to align the red year with the highlighted version of the month.
For example, on the of the photos of the watch in the "Style Options" section has a red 16 under the highlighted "Feb". The calendar show the first of the month being a Monday, which is correct for Feb 2016.

mwbqfor some reason i can't read a regular calendar. The red "16" or leap year needs to be under the highlihted Jan or feb columns instead of the regular text.
the calendar i looked at didn't seem to line up. it's all good
