I don't think the hands have anything to do with the calendar. Here is my understanding of how the calendar works (note that I have never handled one of these watches):
Today's date is in the window at 3:00.
To set the month calendar, you press the button at 2:00 until the year in the 12:00 gizmo (the ad copy calls it a 'complication') aligns under the month.
Once that is set, then the calendar gizmo at 6:00 will be the calendar for the selected month/year.

So in the photo on Massdrop, the watch is set for the 19th. The calendar is set for April 2016 (or maybe May 2020)
mwbqmwbq, FYI, the term complication is what is used in the watch industry to indicate a "function" of the watch. because of the complicated gearing needed to create that function. the date window is a complication.
