boris_hoThe two most well known retanned leathers are Chromexcel and Shell Cordovan. This isn't either of those though Chromexcel is too stretchy for belts. I would be curious to know what it is as well.

boris_ho"Retanning" is a term used by Biff at the tanning salon when Buffy comes out from her session and says, "What'ya think there Biff?" Biff says, "Looks a little weak on you there Buffy. Think you might need to be retanned!". Your welcome.

treeincI will assume that is an attempt at humor. Tanning is the physical and chemical transformation of flesh to leather. Re tanned leather is traditionally chrome tanned which imparts a soft temper like in a purse then it is veg tanned which gives it a firmer temper. The end result is somewhere between chrome tan and veg tan. I am sure the manufacturer will enlighten everyone wondering.

WMCARNESDunno. You'll have to ask Biff. He told me that he's the smartest guy he knows. Cheers

boris_hoBasically, Retanned leather is a combination tanning. There are 2 main ways to tan a leather hide: veg tanning and chrome tanning. Veg tanning is considered by some the best way to go. It is the traditional way leather has been tanned for hundreds of years, using natural tannins such as wood bark, tree oils, etc. Veg tanning usually provides for a thicker, firmer leather, with a great body and beautiful colors. Chrome tanning is a relatively modern way of treating hides with Chromium sulfates. It is a way quicker process, albeit less environmentally friendly. Chrome tannage provides a more supple, flexible leather - yes, something more like what you would see on a purse. You will never get the kind of thickness with Chrome tanning alone as you will with veg. Combination tanning, or retanning, obviously combines both. In this particular case, the leather is veg tanned first, giving it the great body and substance of Veg tanned leather. After, it is Chrome tanned, making it softer and more flexible, and also giving it a bit of a pull-up effect. Overall, it combines the best of both worlds, giving you a nice study leather, that has substance, but is still flexible and comfortable. Hope this answers the question.
