RayFFair enough but the difference is that your watch has a Quartz movement as opposed to the Automatic in this Oris. You're always gonna pay a lot more for mechanical movements. Plus Oris is a very respected Swiss watch company.
RayFThere's nothing like first-hand experience.
You should join and make a comparison between your quartz ESQ and the automatic Oris.
It's not cheap, you're obviously paying for the brand and at least a "60% swiss made" ( 50% if NOS ), but if you don't like it, you'll be able to sell your Oris easily considering the drop price ( and the brand ).
K-ManYou miss my point: I’m not comparing movements here, nor am I into movement oriented pecker/price contests—just pointing out that if anyone is interested in a rectangular-case watch, there are alternatives, and arguably better looking ones, for less money.
I have several automatics and frankly don’t find them any more interesting or desirable than my quartz watches—which always keep better time.
Oris is a mid-grade brand at best, no better or worse than Movado (which owns/makes ESQ, by the way). If someone finds this watch interesting, and has $480 to burn, then step right up! Otherwise, there are plenty of alternatives—cheaper, but just as good looking—and guaranteed to keep time just as well.
EwenFRThanks but no thanks—not that impressed with this particular watch, and not sure what sort of comparison I would make to my quartz ESQ—other than how well they keep time.
My fascination with gears, springs, and counter balances—and who makes them, has given way to a preference for utility and practicality—I even bought an Apple watch recently!
RayFI just call it as I see it. How about I say that Seiko cartier-tank homage for $89 on Amazon is an even better deal? C'mon, you should know better. Can't compare a plain quartz movement to an ETA movement.
RayFI never said one is better than the other. However, I DID imply that one is cheaper to manufacture than the other. It's obvious why all the cheap watches are quartz movements and not swiss made automatics.4
PS. last post bantering with you. have a nice monday
WhaiyunETA movements are mass-produced (just like Seiko’s) whether mechanical or quartz. If you believe more expensive = “more better”, than I suspect you lubricate your watches with Snake Oil, and have a preference for Swiss Kool-Aid?
Don’t worry, many folks with similar symptoms outgrow them in time.
PS: a gentleman always keeps his word. ;- )
RayFI'm sure that ESQ costs a lot less. It should. But I fail to see the point of the comparison. Is it because they're both rectangular? The Oris will easily hold its value because Oris has a great history and reputation. ESQ has neither. They make cheap quartz watches. But there's nothing wrong with fashion watches like ESQ, especially when you get them on the Clearance rack at Marshall's.
BruceReYou sound like the sort of fellow who would judge a man by the price of his timepiec, rather than how well it keeps time!
PS: Wipe that Swiss colored Kool-Aid from your chin ;- )
RayFDo you pay a premium for Swiss watches? Probably. Would I buy a watch not made in Switzerland? Of course. I have and I will (the Seiko Presage Cocktail Time was a good drop). Your ESQ was probably made in China (but with a Swiss quartz movement) so you probably saved a ton of money. Congrats to you!
BruceReIt’s a little late in the century to suggest that China somehow lags behind any othe country in manufacturing capability. Ever buy a Swiss phone or computer? How about a Swiss car?
The idea that Swiss watches are “better“ is nothing more than clever marketing (brought to you by same people who gave you Swiss chocolate, or for that matter, Italian shoes, and French Perfume—but not French bread).
Your money is your own, spend it as you will.
PS: Ever notice how all the best Swiss Reps come from China ;- )
RayFNegative sir. If you know anything about watch making you‘d Know that Swiss movements generally are FAR superior in terms of quality and accuracy. The exception being high end Japanese movements in grand seiko etc. sooooo. Yeeahhh. No good ray.
RayFMaybe stick to collecting matchbox and don’t talk about things you have no knowledge about. Just makes you look like an idiot, but hey, you probably are.
RayFNo comparison between the two. Mineral glass crystal, not sapphire, and a quartz movement that cost ESQ less than $10. You overpaid for what you got if you paid more than $70 for it. If it quits working and you take to a watchmaker who determines it's not just a battery replacement, he'll tell you to pitch into the nearest landfill and buy a new one.
MadAnthonyWayneMy, my—you watch-winders are a pedantic bunch aren’t you? Difficult as it must be, one day you’re going to have to face the facts—none of those Swiss watches tell time any better than the cheapest Timex, or Citizen. That laundry list of parts you mentioned above are fetishes, not features. If you applied that frame of mind to cars, you’d all be running around in 1919 Bentleys!
You want to tell time, or polish your hood ornaments?
RayFWatch collectors like watches that are made differently and better than a Timex. Don't want to spend the money, wear a Timex. Save your judgment for something you understand.
CJR-24Ha—save YOUR judgement, you watch-elitist! There is no finer watch than the humble Timex (with the possible exception of the Apple Watch)!
And no watch is more sophisticated than the iPhone which has nearly made the common watch, redundant. Your mechanical days are numbered —that ticking sound you hear is not your Rolex!
My fascination with gears, springs, and counter balances—and who makes them, has given way to a preference for utility and practicality—I even bought an Apple watch recently!
You sound as though you feel I’m missing something—perhaps you’d care to explain why you feel one is super to the other?
