Oristo Razor Discussions | Drop

This is more than 3 times the price of Merkur's entry level DE razors, 2 times the price of the Merkur Futur, and about the price of an entry level straight razor. I have all of these, and they are all great. The straight razor gives an especially good shave.
I've read about the machining on this being extra precise and all, but is it really worth that much? Sorry for the skepticism, honestly curious.

Daisy_CutterHow much is it worth to you to get it? :) Does seeing other people buy something make you want whatever they are having without knowing about their reasons for wanting it? Why would that be? Might advertising have something to do with it? :) Why isn't there a ladies' razor named like your username?

StyvkulingI'm not considering buying this at all, the price point rules it out for me. I'm just wondering why someone else might, and if there's something I'm missing, that's all!

Daisy_CutterI normally wouldn't buy a razor at this price. I currently only own an entry level Edwin Jagger that's a bit mild and an old straight razor that needs a bit of love before I can use it. What attracted me to this was the solid steel construction and good reviews. If I'm going to bother upgrading my EJ I might as well go for something that'll last a lifetime, and this is currently $40 cheaper than the Feather AS-D2 which has a similar construction and, as reviewers have mentioned, gives a pretty mild shave as well. Just my 2¢

Phil_LatioNice. It's true that this should last a lifetime. I suppose if you amortize the cost over a lifetime, it doesn't seem that much.

Daisy_CutterIMO the drop price makes it more than worth it. This is my first quality razor. I went with the stainless as I was not sure I would like it. I have found zero irritation against the grain. This drop, I'm going with the Stealth. My wife noticed the difference. She says its the first BBS shave she's felt on my face and gave me the go ahead for this drop.

Phil_LatioYou can get a stainless steel handle from (various websites) for usd 20, and use that with whichever 3-piece razor (top, comb, handle) you already own. Yes this seems like a better deal than the more expensive feather razors and those yet more expensive but still made from stainless steel just like your tableware razors out there. Unless you live on a steam boat in the heart of darkness I would not suggest spending more to get the DLC. Would be difficult to find if dropped somewhere in the jungle. I forgot to ask what blades you are using with this? Since razors are basically a handle and holder for razor blades.

StyvkulingThanks for the heads up, I didn't realize separate parts were sold like that. I can see myself dropping it on hard tile in the future but I imagine the Oristo should hold up well regardless. I opted for the stainless finish because the diamond coating doesn't seem worth the price difference to me and I think I prefer the clean aesthetic.
As for blades, I'm using Feathers. I bought a variety pack and found them to shave the smoothest and last the longest. Most other brands tend to tug on my whiskers from the start whereas a Feather won't reach that point for 5+ shaves.

Daisy_CutterI love my Merkur and can't really imagine that this would be 3x better a shave, so I am inclined to agree with you here. I guess if you amortize it over the lifetime of the device (with the savings on the blades themselves), you are still saving money against the cartridges with their 'five blades and lubricating strip' nonsense. Still, there is something a little silly about buying a $100 blade housing for 5 cent blades.

Daisy_CutterTrue enough: invest that $75 that you could have spent on a luxury razor with 'diamond-like carbon coating' and stick with the $25 Merkur razor which seems plenty well-designed to me and, barring the coming economic collapse, you could have a lot more money.

Daisy_CutterThe Merkur Futur, for example, is chrome plated zinc. The Orista in this drop is stainless steel. A well crafted stainless steel razor will last many times longer than a chrome plated zinc razor. I have a Feather and an Orista safety razor. I personally prefer the Feather, but I could easily live with just the Orista. There is little, if any, difference in quality. Comparing the Orista (or Feather) to safety razors not machined from stainless steel isn't a fair comparison. I tossed my chrome plated zinc razors when my Feather arrived; they felt like cheap toys by comparison.

solBLACKthe merkur, mentioned above, is one that I have and at $25 or so, it's a pretty safe way to test the waters. I haven't seen the need to upgrade yet myself after several years. Perhaps I am too unsophisticated to notice, but the Merkur , with its chrome plated zinc, still feels plenty substantial in the hand (especially if you're used to plastic) and shows absolutely no signs of wear yet. Perhaps I will never learn just what I am missing.

JohnfromMOI'll probably go that route first then. I currently use the Harry's shave club razors and those seem to be hit or miss if they're sharp. I shave my head two to three times a week and I hate it when the razor isn't doing it's job well enough.

solBLACKI was using the Dollar Shave club before I switched over to 'safety' razors, as they used to be called. I find it is a much better shave and serious savings.
