Germany’s Black Forest is known not only for its enchanting landscapes but also for its rich history of silver and gold mining. So it comes as little surprise that Otto Hutt chose Pforzheim, just outside the Black Forest, to establish himself as a purveyor of fine silver writing instruments Read More

Massdrop, any rough idea on when this one might come back?

I am VERY interested in this pen. Is it possible to join the drop, if it occurs, to order a 14kt nib? Thanks much.
Any hope of bringing this one back?
Sorry, I don't get the question. Are you surprised I said the Geha was cool? Well that was in 3rd grade; everyone thought the Geha was cool. It had that button under the nib to break the seal of the second cartridge. As an adult I think it is silly; why not just use a long cartridge? For 3rd graders, however, it was super :)
BTW, I noticed that FORMAT-DARMSTADT offers Otto Hutt products. Are you associated with Otto Hutt? If so, is there a chance the Design 04 will be offered again through massdrop?

I gave the Design 4 Code from the last drop as a gift just over a week ago. I have to say that I was myself impressed by how sleek and gorgeous it was. The palladium feels phenomenal, and it is neither slippery nor annoyingly grippy. It is short unposted, but when you post it it returns to normal fountain pen lengths. It's a smooth writer - the cartridge which it comes with sucks, but meh - and the nib is very attractive. The cap screws on to smooth threads, however this is where the one questionable design choice occurs. Where the cap screws on, the pen also unscrews to open up to the cartridge/filling area. While in theory this would not be an issue, it's more of an annoyance in the real world as it seems to repeatedly come loose.

I do like the look of the Design 4 Code. Hmm... I do have a lot of fountain pens already, but how many is too many? ;)

$200 for a nib made from steel and a converter needed? And a MSRP of $400... no

That's great. You make a lot of sense. I do like gold nibs exactly for the reasons you state but sometimes even gold nibs do not feel good. I suppose one needs to stick with the certain feel and weight of a particular pen and use it regularly to be happy. I also buy gold-nibs pen for their resale value. I got into collecting pens because my father and grandfather both had certain favorite pens, and on each birthday I received a nice pen. That is why I am sentimental about pens and now I have so many that I use one every week. Again, thank you for your generous and enlightening response.
Adding to b.steinke3's excellent answer: Gold nibs, even though softer, are practically impervious to corrosion and the relentless wear of time. SS nibs, though durable can and will corrode, especially if carelessly inked.
