I checked out the demos on the website. Listened to a couple of the demos with my Fiio E17 and my Ultrasone Pro 900s. I then switched over to my HD600s for the rest of the demos. The software seemed to favor the HD 600s over the Ultrasones.
For music, I don't care for it. Too much spacialization and the one track has so much reverb it sounds like I'm listening in a bathroom. Give me a touch of crossfeed and that's plenty of "moving the sound out of my head" for me. A good mix can really go a long way and shouldn't need a lot of post processing. Sex In A Pan by Béla Fleck & The Flecktones is one of my favorite songs to listen to for good soundstage on headphones, because the mix is done very well. Since my primary genres of music, electronic and indie rock/alt, don't really favor simulated surround, it's not really a selling point for me.
For movies, the effect is definitely more immersing. I didn't do an A/B/X comparison, but Yamaha's Silent Cinema on my receiver has a fairly good HTF (head transfer function) as well as my Astro Mixamp's Dolby Headphone and Asus DX Dolby Headphone profiles. Since these are hardware solutions (or at least HW/SW combo), the latency produced is extremely low, versus the OoYHS software latency figure quoted in the discussion.
I guess I can see where this software solution may fit in. Heck, at one point I was searching for this exact thing, but with gaming in mind. That's how I ended up buying the Astro Mixamp. Definitely a niche for it, it's just not really for me. Thanks for the demos and good luck improving your software solution to surround simulation!

TomBressonWhat headphones do you use with the astro amp. I use my a40s for gaming, but I recently used a pair of soundmagic hp200s with it, and it sounded like crap. It was super shallow and lacked any depth. I did have to return the hp200s because it was missing foam on the left ear cup, but I don't think that was why. Should I just stick to the Astros for gaming and just use headphones for music?
