— Ha. I am an ocean kayaker. I am glad to have read the discussion and reviews. Now I know not to trust Massdrop descriptions any more than TV home shopping.
Steve-MartinAs an Alaskan, I'm often on the salt water - in a kayak, in an open motor boat, or in the surf with a dip net for salmon. Salt water kills electronics SO quickly, that I mostly leave anything not marine-rated (like a GPS or VHF) at home. If I bring a cell phone, it is in a hard, gasket clam-shell case. I killed two cell phones before adopting that practice. And then, 3 months ago, was walking the dog on the beach, not planning to be near the surf, but went to help a woman land her sockeye salmon and, yup, my phone fell from my chest pocket. Killed another one. Actually, now iPhones are now somewhat water-resistant, so it was *just* grievously injured and would kind of function, but the home button and charging were toast.
Cell phones are fabulous for calling 911, mapping, etc. But on the water, VHF lets you talk to the all boats nearest to you - you know, the ones who are in a position to assist you. There is ALWAYS a compact, marine-rated VHF radio ($100 from WestMarine) on my PDF if the boat is less than 50 feet long. The one time the boat sank and we washed up on the beach completely justified in my mind that hard-and-fast rule of mine. Sent a Mayday and got picked up within the hour by a passing boat.
I own these (not bought off Massdrop) and while they seem useful they did not keep thing dry. We used the smallest one for my wife’s phone (to those asking about the sizes, that is about all you’ll fit in it) for a day at the pool. The bag fell into the water and while removed immediately, utterly failed. The inside was soaked, and the phone dead.
About all all they are good for is organizing things in your pack, and keeping light rain off of them.
Expected ship on this was 7/18 but in my account it doesn't show has having shipped yet, Just wondering if this is an issue where something happened and it didn't get shipped for me, or is this an issue where it hasn't shipped for any one yet?
solBLACKYeah, like an hour after i made the above comment it showed as shipped. Maybe they were busy with other stuff and figured since no one said anything they could delay shipping it for nearly a week.
