A pic of somebody actually wearing these would be a nice reference.
I showed this hat to my wife and she just gave me the look that said don't you dare :(

Show her the Oakley sungless drop and maybe she'll feel not so bad about this hat. https://www.massdrop.com/buy/oakley-evzero-stride-sunglasses

Cuz the Oakley's are uglier?
I've seen comments about light rain, but what about heavy rain? I've been using a Kavu Chillba (http://www.kavu.com/Product/176/Fishermans_Chillba.aspx) for many years and they are amazing, even in heavy rain. Would this OR be as good?
No warranty information has been provided in Massdrop's description for this item. Is it protected by Outdoor Research's "Infinite Guarantee" or just by Massdrop's 30 day return policy or by some other warranty?

That is a fair question and thank you for calling us out on it. I'll talk with our sourcing and copyright trans to make sure this issues is addressed systematically when it can be. We work directly with all the Outdoor brands and therefore the products come with the full manufactures warranty, but it is probably rarely stated anymore. I cannot speak for other communities but I will raise this issue that we can be more diligent about this. The Massdrop quilt is covered under warranty as well, but that probably isn't helpful to you now as you asked months ago and I didn't respond. My apologies.
DannyMilks
The Massdrop quilt has the additional issue that it is Massdrop-labeled and the drop description does not state anywhere the name of the actual manufacturer. From a legal perspective, consumers don't even know for sure if it will be sourced from the same manufacturer from one drop to the next. As such, your statements in the discussion that it is made by "X" and covered by their regular warranty may not even carry any enforceable weight.
I just bought the sun hat at the REI anniversary sale or else I would have jumped on this drop. I live in Texas and had a chance to wear it on a couple of hikes, two outdoor events and a surprise downpour (kept my head dry). Worked fantastically at each. The back is long enough to give good coverage on the neck, but it isn't so huge as to look completely goofy like some other full-coverage sun hats. The cinch works well for both stand-alone and with a wet cloth/bandana underneath. The interior band soaks up a pretty generous amount of sweat without soaking the rest of the hat. Finally, the brim has a flexible foam core that doesn't flop too much, but can be folded for transport.
What kind of suckers would buy this? I wear a similar looking hat that I got for $2 from a clearance rack.

In 55 years I have worn a lot of hats. While a $2 hat will keep the sun off your head, this does a lot more. This is to first I have had that does that, plus stays comfortable in the high mountains, in the jungle, on the beach at the equator, and does OK in light rain. And has a lifetime guarantee, so I don't have to buy another one every year.

Agreed, plus the stitching on these are far superior to the cheap rat-nested approach on the $2.00 hats, which always seem to fail within a year.
Glad that this hat will last at least 20 years before needing another one to purchase.
Hey all, this drop was incorrectly marked as only able to ship domestic. I've corrected this mistake and apologize for the confusion. Good news is at least you're able to join the drop now! @Simonzzz
PaigeD
Thank you PaigeD for correcting that, made me place an order for one just now : )
Hey Gang at Massdrop
I just saw the...
"Sorry, this drop cannot be shipped to AU."
..and wondered, since I just bought the OR Ghost hat from Massdrop- shipped to Australia- is there a difference for this hat?
Simonzzz
Incase you missed it Simon, you should now be able to purchase the drop without problems. Sorry for the confusion!
Mark M.
Thanks Mark, I think I will wait this one out- I ordered the Massdrop OR Ghost Rain hat... https://www.massdrop.com/buy/outdoor-research-waterproof-hats ...and it has been delayed a little so I will not get it before this drop closes. I think I will see that one first to get some idea if I need an actual sun hat, since the Ghost can double as both.
I've had one of the sun hats for 4 years now. I got it originally for a trip to the equator - both for the beach and walking around. It worked perfectly. Only downside is that in a stiff breeze, the brim did tend to flop a bit.
This works like the old pith helmets. The hat has a mesh liner that rests against your head. Then there is a layer of air between that and the outer shell of the hat with a lot of mesh ventilation to keep the breeze flowing. Even just walking around generates enough airflow to keep it cool.
I have been wearing it each summer since then while doing yard work and walking the dogs. I'd order a new one but mine still looks almost like new.
allent
It's Outdoor Research - you should never have to "order a new one" unless you lose the old one, as OR has the same bulletproof lifetime guarantee that DarnTough has :)
Any idea on the brim size for the sun hat?
MWinter
Mine is about 3" front and sides, 4" at the back.

Thanks

We need more summer hats, go vote here and add more: https://www1.massdrop.com/vote/Summer-hats
Had to get one because I live here in Australia, this total price is way cheaper than buying it off Ebay.
Good one MassDrop : )
I have two OR gore-tex rain hats--the quality is great, and they've been indestructible. If you look closely at the photos, you can see the excellent quality of the stitching.
Good news - I just talked with our vendor and we've been able to make X-Large hats available in Khaki. Quantity is limited to five hats, but hopefully that'll work for the cranially well-endowed here. @Grangerknives @JustCallMeCrash
Here is the sizing info from OR's website: Medium: 21.62 - 22.5 in (55 - 57 cm) Large: 23.25 - 24 in (56.5 - 61 cm)

I don't have any personal experience with this particular hat, but I am a size 7 hat and take a small in their Seattle Sombrero model.
Chiming in for the big-head crowd (size 8 here), some better sizing info would be nice. I have a habit of trying on hats anywhere I go, just in case I find one big enough, but very rarely do I find even a baseball cap, much less a nice sun hat like this one.

Cannot confirm or deny its accuracy.
As for how well it would stand up to the rigours of life under the harsh Australian sun - that would depend on how you treat it. It's a good company- I don't own one - I have a Sombrero Rain hat by the same company - it's gore tex - I don't wear it a lot and I treat all my gear with care - so my stuff tends to last a long time. If you're breakdancing on your head it's unlikely going to do well. If you're just wearing it on your head - unless the sunlight there is worse than the sunlight in Arizona, I suspect it'll do admirably. I can say that Outdoor Research does make some good products.
I would like to order but what size is "Medium or Large". I wear a 7-3/8 ball cap.
One size does not fit all. Up to what size does this fit? I wear an American size 8 or a metric size 64. I would love to get it if it will fit. I read the details. It comes in medium and large. How frustrating! The world is not filled with pinheads; some of us have full sized noggins!
Does anyone know if this hat will stand up to the rigours of life under the harsh Australian sun?

If you need a tough quality hat for outdoors, take a look at some Tilley hats.
