If you're the type of person who pulls out their phone all the time or needs/wants to in situations where you may not be able to, this thing will change your life. I have one and it's fantastic in what it does. No it's not a stand alone device (there's the Neptune Pine for that), but I'd never want something like that anyways.
Aside from the obvious function of being able to see new notifications in real time as I get them, because of this thing I now can:
1) See the weather, the number of missed calls, unread e-mails and text messages at all times
2) Make my phone ring at max volume when I can't find it around the house, no matter what volume setting my phone is currently set to
3) Set my phone's volume setting (silent, vibration, volume level) in case I forgot to and can't pull out my phone
4) Use my watch as a remote control to control my music on my phone
5) See who's calling me and decline call if necessary (during busy times)
6) Setup up templates for commonly used messages via text messaging and send them from the watch (ex: "Going to be late. Be there ASAP").
7) Set an alarm that'll wake me up but not my wife because it vibrates the motor in the watch while it's on my wrist so only I'm affected when I wake up early for work
These are the things I do commonly with my watch, but what you may do with it are your own.
