Why on earth would I need a hard case for my knives? I mean... they're knives.
I put my 1911 in a Pelican 1200, but that is a $1200 pistol.

G-skiiiI guess it depends on the kind of knives - a lot of people have collections of custom knives that cost $1000 or more each. Many of them have handles made from natural materials that have finishes far less durable that a firearm typically does. When I travel to knife shows, I typically have at least 4 personal knives and 20+ for work, so I take this case and a 1300-series case that holds 21 pieces.

JonasHeinemanWell touche, I can see that use case if it's for work. I just didn't think that the typical knife user would even consider this remotely useful. And I kind of figured it would be more of your typical knife users in this community and not knife resellers.
Personally, if I were to spend $1000 on something, I would much rather have a pair of Ruger AR-15's or Kel-Tec Sub2000's over a knife.

G-skiiiThere exists a large community of people that collect various practical EDC tools, in addition to having high-end tools such as:
- Knives (Chris Reeve, William Henry, and many more custom makers) - Flashlights (Lenslight, Prometheus, and many small shops producing exotic bodies) - Watches (google the cost of some high-end watches, I think there is a drop for an A. Lange & Sohne on MD right now (lol)) - "Tactical" Jewelry (Starlingear or Steel Flame, and many more)
Massdrop has drops on many of the more practical tools plus some of the mid-high end ones too. We aren't necessarily resellers but we like to admire and trade our stuff at shows or gatherings like collectors of other hobbies. For non-locals and people with large numbers of tools for those gatherings, you would need a travel case versus carrying them on your person.
While this doesn't apply to everyone, people in other countries or in places like Commiefornia (...sigh) may not have to option to spend their hard earned moolah on shooting sports.

FadenThanks for the explaination that you provided. I guess that makes sense for some ppl. I reside in Texas, so I don't understand that whole "guns are bad thing".
I guess I also don't understand why someone would spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on an item that does the same job as on that costs less than 100 bucks. My fiancé says that if it's not functional, I don't like it... and she's right.
Like, if you have a $40k watch, and I have a $10 Spider-Man one I stole from my nephew, but they both keep time exaclty to the millisecond, wouldn't you say that I got the better deal? Who would be more upset if their watch was broken, stolen or even scratched?
Imo, ppl spend their money on stupid ass things sometimes. But I digress, bc I probably buy what some ppl would consider stupid ass shit too.
So... To each their own, and may their life be long and fruitful.

G-skiiiI completely understand. I honestly was in your place over a decade ago with practical over fancy. I still am compared to my wife who has way more high-end EDC tools than I do. Things exist because people want them, also, a lot of higher end products have a reason to be that expensive... others not. I can never justify a 30k phone plated in gold and encrusted with diamonds.
Going back to your example of your $1200 1911, which I assume could be a Springfield, Kimber, or Wilson Combat, etc.. Why would you have purchased that model over a Rock Island 1911 GI? $400 vs $1200, does the same thing. Fit and quality of parts and overall accuracy are a huge difference in the models but both put lead shot down range. My own personal opinion, the trigger on the RI is like pulling a sharp rock against a dried out rubber band compared to the crisp pull of any of the 3 other makers i mentioned.
Another argument is cars, why do Ferraris and Lambos exist when a Honda or Ford will do the exact same thing, and probably save a boat ton of gas? Fit, finish, craftsmanship, pure fun?
Watches, my $50 buck quartz g-shock gives me the right time all the time. Why would I want a $20k mechnical A. Lange? Handcrafted movement, parts are tiny, but made and engraved by hand, hundreds of man hours to produce a time piece with a mix of old and new techniques. Practically speaking, if I had that disposable income, I would spend it on retirement but for others it may be an investment or a life long dream.
Knives, wow where to get started. For the most part, same as the previous two arguments. My Spydercos and ZTs are my work horses but I carry Chris Reeves, Benchmades, Mcustas, among others for more formal occasions. Also when I'm in an office and everyone freaks out over my ZT 450 but don't freak out over a William Henry Nautilus.
EDC community is a large one, welcome all the same. :)

FadenOkay okay, you spoke my language. It is a Springfield. You're right, the quality in them does make a difference and I am all too aware of that.
I am uninformed in the realm of knives, but it is kind of a choice bc I see them as something useful and not pretty. Also the same reason I would never buy a Ferrari, when I could buy a Ford that could drive over it without missing a beat. But you have convinced me that there is a valid market for this case and you have very validly answered my original question.
Just gimme 10 years MD and I may be interested in this kind of thing.
