The Gonzo perspective:
The short version: Big, good quality, Grail pen. Reasonable price at lowest point. Consider custom work. Warranty topic already covered. A smattering of humor scattered throughout. Food for thought.
The entertaining version:
The Pen: This is "That Pen" for many folks. This is a big honkin' pen. It's often compared (favorably) to the MB 149. In fact, many people prefer the M1000 for basic quality. If you like BIG pens, this one is for you. It will inspire pen geeks to drool, but doesn't have quite the flash of the other brand. The size is similar to the MB 149 and the M1000, though well balanced, is pretty hefty.
Price: Very competitive at the lowest drop. With the pen coming from Massdrop, there is some assurance of the quality. (see comments below about warranty info.) Buying from a solid, known retailer - whether online or brick and mortar - will cost more. If you can swing close to $500 for the pen, I might save a little longer and go that way, or ... go with Massdrop, with the money you'll (probably) save, send it to a nibmeister. [Note: You'll probably prefer to have the nibmeister work on the pen in front of you at a show rather than interact long-distance, but it's still an option.]
The price on eBay seems to be hit or miss. I wasn't impressed with the ratings of some of the sellers who had it as "Buy it now" for less than $500. Amazon, however, had third-party sellers peddling this model with various nib sizes for less than $500 within the past 6 months. (Source: camel)
A quick word about the nib: if you're going to get custom work done, consider going larger than you think - a good nibmeister can always reduce the size but only a few with magical powers (therefore probably not in this dimension) can increase the nib size.
In terms of warranty, Massdrop has the answers but if you look at other discussions for similar pens (and this one if you care to read from the beginning, I think) you'll get just as good info. Suffice it to say, the "warranty" topic has be covered. Please keep your batons to yourselves and help me move this dead horse elsewhere. ;-)
So there you have it.
I hope this helps anyone considering this drop.
Cheers

GonzoTGreat+1, i always go for the biggest nib possible when considering a custom grind, a B would be the minimum, a BB preferrred..

GonzoTGreatI'm not sure which seller you're looking at on eBay. There's one from Italy that has quite a few M1000s for sale for under Massdrop's lowest price (expedited shipping included) who has basically perfect reviews. This is an authorized Pelikan dealer I've used in the past and been very pleased with (he included 2-day shipping from Italy and the nicer round Pelikan packaging which included an Edelstein ink bottle). Massdrop will sometimes have great deals, other times their deals are good but not great. This is a good but not great deal.

mulrichThe Italian retailer I noticed on eBay had iffy reviews. Maybe a different retailer, then. I'll check again when I have the chance. If the seller has a strong rep, probably a good idea to go that way.
