Regrettable nib on my Massdrop Pelikan 805 demonstrator - rather raspy and too many dry starts, worse than my 200 and my wife's three 400s ... That's the risk with online discounted purchases, I guess. Will take pen to a shop or show for adjustment. Will buy expensive items locally and cheapies online. "live and learn" as they say. So sad, since I had so wanted an 800/805.

Nibs.com is also definitely a good deal at $495 because Pelikan nibs can be hit or miss generally speaking. If a retailer like nibs.com has a nibmeister in-house to inspect every single nib that goes out the door, that extra little bit of cost can be worthwhile. In the grand scheme of things, $45 is pretty good for piece of mind on a pen at this price.
I happen to like this pen in particular because its like a sleeper pen. From a distance, it might just look like some random demonstrator. From across a room, you might not be able to distinguish it from a TWSBI demo. I'd say I'm the opposite of Matt Armstrong. He likes his pens flashy and shiny. I like my pens totally subdued so they dont draw attention.

You know, we of the Fountain Pen collecting/purchasing ilk, generally go for interesting resin bodies, sometimes metal bodies and lord knows, some crazy expensive Urushi bodied pens. So it has always struck me as odd, that pen manufacturers actually charge more, for what is really nothing more than a clear, plastic body version of their otherwise, colorful pens--and odder still, that we buy 'em! Yes the piston fill mechanism is cool, but you can see the same guts for a tenth of the price with a nice TWISB! And don't get me wrong--I'm a Pelikan guy, but I question why someone would pay the price of a very nice M800 for a clear plastic pen? Think it over.

I have a soft fine on my 3776 Chartres Blue, and that writes okay, and my Black Diamond Rhodium wrote smoothly after I wrote figure 8's all over a brown paper bag for ten minutes (strangely satisfying), but the celluloid is SMOOTH! It is like a different nib. In addition, the Briarwood write better than the entry-level, but not as good as the celluloid. I have mostly mediums, but my Black Diamond Rhodium and Chartres Blue are fine and kept at the office. I really want to buy more celluloid, but I am resisting. My true goal s the Pelikan m800 Grand Place or the Aurora Africa limited editon. I am also lusting after the Aurora Nebulosa limited edition.
Do try the 3776 "soft" nibs, and you may want to get the nib you have smoothened. They can write without that "feedback" if you smooth up the nib.

SkipPpThank you very much for sharing your experience of high-end 3776. I only have one soft-fine of pilot 91. It's definitely right on the edge of too much feedback for me, considering that I actually prefer a touch of feedback on my nibs :) I will try your figure-8 tip on my soft-fine nib. All my other nibs are either Japanese medium or western fine. I've actually acquired a taste for broader/juicer nib along my pilgrimage to the ultimate writing experience. After acquiring my pilot custom 823, I have lost the sight of my next level-up pen LOL. I'm saving or looking for an excuse to reward myself with a Montblanc, though. Thanks for sharing your idea of grail pens. They look amazing. Good luck and have fun

SkyPThat deal is only good if you're not in California. Since Classic Fountain Pens is based in CA, I have to pay sales tax. Even with the sales tax from Massdrop, this is cheaper.

The pen arrived today. It wrote beautifully out of the box. The fine nib is perfect with heavy ink flow and as expected out of pelikan pens, it writes like a medium. Perfect for me :-) Overall a fantastic buying experience.
